Our good friend Eric Sarjeant’s article on his adventures throughout the Rubicon Trail during TLCA’s Rubithon, one of the longest-running 4WD gatherings in the USA!

Learn more about how Slee took what is a bolt on solution from 74 Weld and optimized the already existing setup to get the most out of these portal axle upgrades.

Through some thoughtful choices Slee has fine-tuned the suspension of this truck to accommodate not only the portal axles but also the larger 37” tires. Some may wonder why we didn’t choose larger tires like 38’s or 40’s, we felt that 37’s fit a sweet spot between off road performance and minimizing required cutting and modification to the body of the truck.

In addition to the portal axles, this was a great time to swap in the electronic locking front differential from an LX700h to add even more capability off-road. Thanks to 74 Weld making a “hybrid” portal box in the front, using GX550 knuckles and hubs but with the correct input gear for the larger LX700h CV axles.

The final piece of the portal puzzle was adjusting the previously installed ADS Racing suspension to right in the middle of the shock stroke to have equal up and down travel yielding a more stable, comfortable, and responsive truck both on and off-road. All together this is a complete system to marry portal axles to the GX550 platform with virtually no compromises.
