Very interesting testing going on here at CH Performance & Dyno. Here we have a 408 CI LS equipped with three different S400 based turbos truly BACK TO BACK.
In RED we have a VS Racing 92/103
In GREEN we have a Forcedinductions.com 94/104
In BLUE we have the NEW Comp Turbo Technology 98/106
With 10 pounds of dome pressure on each turbo and a 1.32 T6 Housing on each you can see the different relationships that the turbos have with this particular 408. No tune changes, every variable as consistent as possible, regulated shop air on the dome.
Testing these turbos in this manner allowed us a consistent base to determine the characteristics of each turbo quickly while also providing the data that we needed to make a proper conclusion on each turbo.
I will not be listing boost numbers, I will not list fuel flow, correction, etc, as these specifics are all entirely irrelevant to our testing. The presssure deltas will also remain arbitrary for the sake of saving argument.
But what does all of this mean?
On first glance you might conclude the VSRacing turbo is the winner but there is a much deeper story here than what meets the eye.
While the VS did make the most power and the most torque in this particular test, the boost was also considerably higher than the other turbos. This essentially means that the turbo was in it for a good time, not a long time in terms of drive pressure.
FIS made a very strong effort showing SIGNIFICANTLY less boost to produce the same power while also carrying power further into RPM.
Comp made power even further into RPM than the other turbos at less boost than the FIS and was up almost 200HP at 7000RPM.
CONCLUSION(In our opinion):
The VS does what VS does best, it is insane value for the money spent backed by top of the line customer support.
FIS comes in with significantly faster spoolup than the Comp at the cost of top end power essentially matching the VS even at lower overall boost. FIS sports amazing customer support as well and does exactly what the turbo was designed to do. It’s a bad ass turbo.
Comps new 98mm absolutely decimated the competition and is by far the most powerful S400 on the market at the cost of low end performance. Comp also has top tier customer support and a turbo that delivered EXACTLY what was promised; An S400 that can make more horsepower in the same footprint. Great work Joe and friends!!
What a great time and a great opportunity. I work closely with all three of these companies and have been blessed to be in a position to provide this testing for those curious.
A quick side note for those that are wondering, a 408 is definitely too large for a single S400 turbo, this was simply a test of the characteristics and capability of each turbo. The results are not doctored or manipulated in any way to favor a certain turbo. We did test all three turbos at higher boost pressures while maintaining boost as steady through the RPM as possible with exactly the same results. This test is deliberately at lower boost pressures/dome settings in order to not sell a number for one company or another. It is all unbiased, educated, slightly scientific opinion.
