On a farm to market road in Texas you wave at everybody. On a freeway in Texas you make eye contact with nobody. Same state, same people, completely different set of rules. 👋

The country wave is a real language and it has levels. Two fingers lifted off the top of the wheel is the standard, issued to anyone you pass. The full hand goes to somebody you actually know. The index finger alone is polite but busy. And if the other driver slows down and stops in the middle of the road so both of you can roll a window down and talk for ten minutes, that is not rude to anybody behind you, because there is nobody behind you, and even if there were they would wait.

Move that exact person to a six lane interchange in Houston or Dallas and the whole system switches off. Nobody waves. Nobody looks. That is not coldness, it is just a different kind of arithmetic when there are four million other people trying to get somewhere.

The strange part is how fast it comes back. Get twenty miles past the last big box store and the hand comes up off the wheel again without anybody deciding to do it. 🚜
