Car companies are officially trying to rent you your own vehicle features, and it’s pure corporate greed.
Look at what’s happening right now. For about eight years, BMW has been charging owners to use their heated seats. They started locking people out of their own cars unless they paid $18 a month. Toyota used to charge $8/mo for remote start, but they jacked it up. Now, they force you into bundles like their "Music Lover" plan, making you pay $15 a month just to use the remote start app on a vehicle you already bought.
Think about the actual mechanics of that. The heating coils are already glued inside the cushions. The remote start modules are bolted to the firewall. You already paid for the hardware. But if your credit card declines big Corp uses software to shut your features off.
This is exactly why maintaining or buying a good used car makes way more sense right now. If you buy a 2018 or 2019 model and it has a physical button on the dash, that feature works forever. No apps, no software updates, no monthly billing cycles.
Instead of losing thousands to new-car depreciation and tech fees, you can buy a solid used vehicle or put a few bucks into the one you have. Bring it to a shop, swap out the wear items like belts, fresh fluids, and pads, and you have a dead-reliable machine that you actually own.
Or, if you are hunting for a used vehicle to bypass this subscription nonsense, bring it by for a pre-purchase inspection. We will get it up on the lift, and tell you exactly what it needs to be reliable.
