What is the difference between PPF and ceramic coatings, and what would best benefit your vehicle?
What is a Ceramic Coating?
Ceramic coatings like their name, are liquid coatings that bond to a vehicles paint and makes it hydrophobic. Put differently, water beads right off of your paint and any type of dirt, bird poop, or other blemishes and are much easier to maintain. Ceramic coatings are not only for the paint, there are different coatings for different purposes such as glass, leather, plastic trim on the interior and exterior. Coatings help protect from elements and give longevity to what you are applying to them. A good installer goes over with the client what preparation needs to be done before applying a coating such as cleaning the vehicle, performing a paint correction(polishing and buffing), etc. Coatings are amazing for your vehicle!
What is PPF?
PPF stands for paint protection film. PPF is a very thin, self-healing and clear film that will protect from physical damage such as scratches, rock chips, and different road debris. Top quality PPF comes with a ceramic top coat built into the film so the water beads off and protects the film from the same damage a coating would protect from. PPF can also come in a matte/satin (stealth) finish or if you want to change the color of your vehicle while still having the benefits of protection there are color changing PPF’s as well! There are also awesome add ons like windshield PPF or even carbon fiber PPF’s that look amazing in mirrors and trims, or even hoods.
PPF or a Cermaic Coating?
PPF is removable so if you back into your garage door and scrape an area that is protected by it, all you need to do is have the piece removed and replaced, which is a very easy fix compared to having a scratch repainted, sanded, and finished which means $$$ and time.
A ceramic coating will not give you the psychical and self-healing properties PPF will, but a coating will give you ease of maintenance absolutely, making the car easier to clean. It also comes down to budget, a ceramic option will always be cheaper than a PPF option.
A lot of people do the best of both worlds, protecting high impact areas with PPF, and then coating the rest of the car! This a great package and will not cost as much as doing the whole vehicle in PPF.
As far as cost difference, true ceramic coatings can range from 700-2000 depending on the longevity of the coating and the preparation and condition of the vehicle.
PPF ranges all over the place from 1,300-8,000+ depending on what areas are covered, the difficulty of installation (curvy cars are hard!) and the quality of film.
An awesome package that a lot of people love is a full front PPF (full hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, and pillars) and a ceramic coating on the rest of the vehicle! This package will range from 2800-4000.
Vehicle protection and maintenance is so important, but a lot of people are curious to what would best suit them and their vehicle and we hope this helps! I will also leave an amazing YouTube video that really helps understand PPF better linked down below.
