Upcoming snowfall probabilities for >1” of snow are ranging between 20-50% in Central Illinois and 60-90% in northern Illinois through next Monday Night. 3” levels top out 10-30% locally with up to 50% In the northern part of the state.

To me, a major winter storm seems unlikely with this setup. There could be an early round of snow next weekend, but the setup to me looks less likely to produce a major impactful winter snow for Central Illinois. Rather, we’ll be more favored for cold rain and/or a mixed bag of rain/snow. We keep pushing milder/warmer air north rather than having the cold air locked in place. If you want a bigger snow in the WCIA area, you want the cold air to already be there to greet the storm system, or you want a low riding along the Ohio River.

A word of caution on pages pledging or even showing maps with specific snow totals down to the decimal point. I don’t know about you but I usually don’t even know what I’m having for breakfast the next morning, but some online social mediaologist pages are making big promises 7-10 days out with big snow coming our way. Snow forecasting is extremely fickle and confidence remains very low in specific amounts up until a few days out from an event.
