Had something a little different in the shop yesterday.

Customer trailered this ‘77 Baja Bug up from a couple hours away for Brian Hosner to get the new carb setup dialed in. It’s running a 1641 dual port with a 009 distributor, Pertronix ignition, and was swapped from a Solex 34 PICT-3 to a Weber 40 IDF.

The car itself is a pretty neat build too. Fully caged front to rear with 1-5/8” chromoly tubing, A-arm front suspension with 14” of travel, +2 rear trailing arms with 11” of travel, adjustable Fox 2.0 coilovers with DSC remote reservoirs, and disc brakes on all four corners.

We were hoping to get it on the dyno too, but we ended up running out of time trying to finish another engine build that had to get out the door. Even so, it was cool seeing something different come through the shop.

A lot of people think all we do is EFI tuning, but that’s not the case. If you’ve got a carbureted setup that needs to be dialed in, Brian does plenty of those too.

Another one wrapped up on the dyno.

This 2009 Pontiac G8 6.0 was trailered up to Ga***rd from a couple hours downstate after getting a cam, valvetrain, and other upgrades. It barely wanted to start, wouldn’t idle worth a damn, was running lean, stalling out, and was nowhere near ready to drive.

Got it loaded on the dyno and started from the ground up. The first pull was just working through the RPM range, dialing in the fueling and making sure the AFR was where it needed to be before leaning on it any harder. Once everything was looking good, we went for a full pull… and the rear tires had other plans. They’re completely smoked, so it kept spinning on the rollers before we could get an accurate power number.

The tune itself turned out great, though. Starts clean, idles like it should, drives right, and the fueling is finally where it belongs. He’s coming back in the next week or two with a fresh set of rear tires so we can finish it off and get some real dyno numbers.

Brian even jumped in the driver’s seat for a couple pulls and had some fun with this one.

I’ve tuned quite a few of these G8s over the years, and I still think they’re some of my favorite GM computers to work with in HP Tuners. The calibration strategy on these cars just makes sense, and they always respond really well when they’re tuned correctly.

If you’ve got a G8, GTO, Camaro, or another GM that needs tuned after a cam swap or other engine work, send me a message on Facebook or give me a call.

Here’s one we’ve got in the shop right now.

This 2020 GMC 6.2l made the trip up from Florida after one of the lifters decided it had enough. Fortunately, it made it here before things turned into a complete engine replacement.

This truck is getting a BTR Stage 2 cam, new lifters, valve springs, a complete timing set, oil pump, VVT components, seals, gaskets, and everything else that makes sense while we’re this deep into the engine. The ECM is also out getting unlocked through HP Tuners so it’ll be back on the dyno for a custom calibration once everything is buttoned up.

I know a lot of people follow this page because of the tuning side of things, but we do a lot more than just tuning. If you’re local and have been thinking about a cam swap, engine work, or a performance build, we’d be glad to help with that too.

If you’ve got a project in mind, send me a message here on Facebook or give me a call or text!

Most people know us for small engine repair or performance tuning, but the truth is we do a whole lot more than that.

At Fouled Plugs Small Engine Repair, we work on just about anything with an engine.

• Lawn mowers, zero turns, generators, chainsaws, trimmers, snowblowers, pressure washers, wood splitters, and other small equipment.
• ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, motorcycles, golf carts, and go karts.
• Cars, trucks, and performance builds from routine repairs and diagnostics to camshaft installs, engine work, electrical diagnostics, drivability issues, and custom performance upgrades.

Whether it’s a work truck that won’t start, a race car with an electrical problem nobody else can solve, or a mower that needs a complete rebuild, we’ll take a look.

We have an in house roller dyno, milling machine, lathe, sandblasting equipment, and the tooling to handle jobs that many shops have to send elsewhere. From carburetor rebuilds and fuel system work to diagnostics, fabrication of simple machined parts, and custom tuning, we do as much as possible under one roof.

Need custom dyno tuning? We tune cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and more.

If you’ve got something that’s been sitting in the garage, something another shop couldn’t figure out, or you’re looking for a shop that can actually diagnose the problem instead of throwing parts at it, send us a message!

If it has an engine, there’s a good chance we work on it.
