Many of you know me for being a very versatile detailer, but the marine industry has been our bread and butter for the last 4 years across North Georgia, so let’s crunch some number on why prices are what they are…
I want to break something down for mainly RV, yacht and boat owners why professional maintenance costs what it does.
It’s not the early 2000s anymore. Labor, insurance, equipment, chemicals, transportation, and the cost of operating a legitimate business have changed dramatically.
Let’s look at what it costs to operate ONE professional four-person detailing crew.
DAILY OPERATING EXPENSES:
• Labor: $500-$1,400 (based off working 8-14 hours a day)
• Vehicles: $62.23 per day, including fuel, insurance, and maintenance.
• Business insurance: $37.42 per day.
• Equipment wear and replacement: $43.83 per day.
• Chemicals and compounds: $116.66 per day, excluding ceramic coatings.
And we’re not finished.
That doesn’t include all the additional costs associated with running a professional marine detailing company:
Extension cords, microfiber towels, wool pads, foam pads, backing plates, polishing attachments, safety harnesses, scaffolding, floating work platforms, specialized equipment, overtime, equipment downtime, estimates, invoicing, administrative work, scheduling, supply runs, training, and countless other expenses.
It also doesn’t account for the financial responsibility of managing an operation and standing behind the quality of our work.
And we haven’t even discussed profit yet.
So when a yacht owner receives a $6,000 estimate for a week of extensive paint correction and preservation work, understand that number represents much more than four people showing up with polishing machines.
You’re paying for skilled labor, years of experience, professional equipment, proper procedures, insurance, accountability, and the knowledge required to maintain a million-dollar asset.
Let’s put this into perspective.
If you own a $900,000 yacht or coach is 0.67% of it’s value
Yet some owners will hesitate to invest that amount in maintaining one of the vessel’s most expensive exterior assets: its paint system.
The alternative?
Allowing oxidation, contamination, and surface deterioration to progress until correction is no longer a viable option, potentially leading to extensive repainting, significant downtime, and repair costs reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars or more.
Professional maintenance doesn’t guarantee your paint will last forever. But properly executed correction and preservation can help extend its serviceable life and potentially delay costly refinishing.
There’s a difference between paying for someone to polish your investment and investing in a company that understands how to preserve its finish.
We aren’t competing to be the cheapest company on the dock or street.
We have been investing in the people that assist on jobs, equipment, training, and processes necessary to deliver professional results.
Yes, I understand fuel prices are high, slip prices are high, water levels are low and it has became the perfect storm to hurt us as a business. This can even count from an automotive stand point. Our supplier recently notified us of some big price increases on a lot of products we use are increasing. Ultimately most business owners are in business to pursue their passion and make money to support their families. So with the effects of the economy we will be changing up scheduling to make things run more efficiently on days I am not handling with my job roofing. At the end of the day I have a family to support and obligations to be made. I hope all my customers understand and if you have any roofing concerns I would love to continue to work with you. Also any referrals that lead to a closed job will eligible for a $500 reward. Thank you again.
