This is my 13-year-old grandson Max and his motorcycle.
Max races motocross. During practice last week, the engine lost all its power. Now it will not start. I don't know anything specific about motorcycles and nothing about 2 Stroke Engines. So I applied the math strategy I learned in High School.
"When you face a large problem and don't know how to solve it, start by solving what you can solve, and the LARGE problem won't be so large".

By the way, that's a good strategy for solving problems in life.

I started the 2-stroke engine diagnostic with what I know. Disconnected the "Kill Switch". No change. Added fuel into the Intake Air. No Change. Connected my Pico Technology to the engine. Tested Secondary Ignition. There was some spark, so I knew the Crankshaft Sensor was functioning. I decided to test it anyway (trying to learn), and it was a perfect Sine Wave. I continued secondary ignition testing by placing the probe on the ignition coil. There was no ripple after the firing line. Measured kV voltage. About 3 KV. The ignition coil is working, but I think it's weak, so I replaced it. Now it starts and idles but will not accelerate.

I decided to test compression & ignition timing. Ignition timing was TDC, and compression was 137 psi. That seems correct enough to make it run. Everything I know looks good. It should run.
The only other possibility is it's not getting enough air into the cylinder. Removed the Air Filter. No change. Removed the exhaust also. No change.
I researched the Air Distribution System, and it's operational, and I immediately knew what was wrong. We removed the Reed Valve Assembly and could visually see 1/2 of the Assembly was defective. We ordered the new part and will race on Saturday. Diagnostics is a process of eliminating, not swapping parts and guessing.

The reason I'm writing this post is that we tested by measuring the engine systems. We used physics and math to solve our problem. I'm teaching my grandson science & math. Because of his interest in racing, he's now interested in science and math.

In the photos are the waveforms we measured and analyzed and lead us to our cause/failure.I am so proud of my Mighty Max.

For several years, I belonged to a local NAPA Business Development Group (BDG). We were a group of about 8-10 local, Independent, Automotive Repair Shop owners who were also NAPA AutoCare Centers. Our primary focus was marketing.
We pooled our funds and bought local TV time to run our group commercials. We also bought low-mileage newer vehicles that needed minor repairs, refurbished them, and gave them to local needy families twice a year. That program was called "Wheels of Hope".
In 2018, it was my turn to be the BDG President. My view was that nothing was more important to our business's success than having good, well-trained, competent technicians. With that direction, we started attending many local High School Career Fairs. To our surprise, as we were demonstrating advanced Automotive Pico Scope diagnostic technology, techniques, and strategies to the students, we techs also started learning from each other.

As a result of that, Dennis & I started the Central California Diagnostic Club (CCDC) the following year. CCDC meets the first Saturday of every month, and we have conducted 90 PicoScope workshops. We technicians present case studies, strategies, techniques, test results, waveforms, etc. from cars we repaired the previous month. We, technicians, learn from each other, shoulder to shoulder. Instead of competing, we share. This accelerates the advancements in our automotive diagnostic routines.

All school Automotive Instructors & their students are WELCOME to these workshops. CCDC then started working with some local Fresno area High School Automotive Instructors. Because these instructors were partnering with the local Regional Occupation Program (ROP), we became acquainted with them.

Soon the Fresno County Schools District Superintendent asked us (CCDC) if we would become the Automotive Program Advisors for all 15 high school programs if they purchased Pico Scope technology for ALL programs. Just one district, Fresno Unified School District, is the 3rd largest school district in the state of California. We obviously said "Yes," and the school district put their programs in "High" gear. We trained all 15 instructors for 3 months, and those instructors decided they wanted to have a local High School Automotive Diagnostic competition. Wow!!

They had those in the 70s when I was in high school, but they ended soon after. So, for the following 3 months, CCDC trained & prepared 60 students and their 15 instructors with Pico Scope Advanced Diagnostic Technology in preparation for the 1st Annual High School Automotive Diagnostic Competition. The competition occurred in April of 2026, and it was a success.

As a result of that, ROP approached CCDC about endorsing their Grant Proposal for $150,000 dollars to build a Pico Scope Curriculum and begin a Pico Scope Adult Education Program. The Grant Proposal was accepted, and 2 of our local technicians were hired to design and teach. One hundred & sixty persons applied, but unfortunately we only had room for 36.

Upon graduation, the students who successfully complete the Pico Scope Curriculum will receive a Certificate of Competence signed by Dennis, Scott & me. Near the beginning of CCDC, it was Dennis's idea for us to certify students as competent with Pico Diagnostic. Scott designed the curriculum and was the lead instructor.

Hi Complete Car Care friends.

This is a directive I wrote for one of our commercial accounts that the manager asked me to write up. When the company manager called me to schedule an appointment for one of his vehicles with "Heater Not Hot". He let me know that the vehicle was not available that day as it was on the job, which worried me. He asked me why I was so concerned about a heater.
I let him know and he asked me to write this directive, which is now company policy. Here it is for all of you to read as well.

"ATTENTION" Service Masters Vehicle Drivers
It came to my attention last week that one of your fleet vehicle's heater air was not hot. To the driver, this might seem to be an inconvenience but for us, it is a large "RED FLAG" warning!!!

The most likely cause for a vehicle's heater blowing cold air is a low coolant level. That was the cause for your vehicle. There was not enough coolant in the system to circulate through the heater core.

MY CONCERNS
1) When a vehicle is being driven with a low coolant level, the engine's water pump can suffer damage. The pump's impeller should be fully submerged in liquid. When the system is low, the pump mixes air with the coolant. That is called cavitation. It damages the impeller and impeller shaft bearing due to the larger vibration.

2) DO NOT trust the engine coolant temperature gauge when the cooling system is low. The Coolant Sensor is designed to sense COOLANT temperature. If there is no coolant circulating past the sensor, the gauge reading is inaccurate.

3) When the heater is not blowing hot air, my greatest concern is the possibility of engine failure. Overheating can and will damage the engine.

4) The transmission oil cooler may be inside the radiator. When the engine overheats, so does the transmission.

Please check the coolant level in the morning when the cooling system is cool. You should see a "Cold" & "Warm" level mark. Every morning the coolant level should be at the "Cool" mark. After the engine is fully warm and driven, the coolant level should be near the "Hot" mark.

IMPORTANT!!!!! In the morning, if the coolant level has NOT RETURNED to the "COOL" mark, there is likely a coolant leak. The Coolant Recover Reservoir can be FULL and the radiator EMPTY.

TIPS
If the Coolant Temperature Gauge Indicator Needle is not ROCK SOLID, it varies, that is an indication of air pockets passing by the Coolant Sensor. Check the coolant level and top off.
There are many types of coolant. For simplicity, use only Distilled Water. Do not use tap water. I don't want Fluorine, chlorine, or iron in the cooling system. It's just chemistry.

Today, September 28, 2026, marks the beginning of the 42nd year of Complete Car Care.

It all began in 1968 at Fort Miller Jr. High School. As 8th graders, we were required to choose a career path & I chose pharmacy. The rest of my school days were dedicated to Math & Science.
In the summer of 1971, at the end of my junior year at Fresno High School, I worked all summer at Producers Dairy.
I saved enough money to buy a 1957 Chevy Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop with a 327 ci engine, Hurst Shifter, Flower Mag wheels, and Diamond Tuck & Roll Upholstery.

It didn't stay that way long. Got a lot faster. I started racing around on Belmont Ave. I broke my car so often my dad stopped helping me. I dropped my Physiology Class at the end of the 1st quarter and transferred to beginning Automotive. I finished with a B grade.

In my senior year, 1972, I started attending car races. In 1974, I got the opportunity to work on the #98 Super Modified race car. From there, I spent 3 years working on a Stock Car. In 1978, I became the Crew Chief for an "Open Wheel" full midget.

We raced 25+ races a year all over the West Coast. In September of 1983, while I was driving the #43 midget at Madera Speedway, I was involved in a racing accident. After surgery to fuse my neck vertebrae and 18 months of rehabilitation, my doctor declared me permanently & partially disabled. I was told I was physically unable to return to my previous occupation.

At 31 years of age, I had to start ALL OVER with a young wife, daughter & son. During those 2 years I was injured, I needed to work and make money. The pain was enormous. I learned later that the fractured disc in my neck was pressing against my Spinal Cord, so I wasn't able to effectively use my right arm & hand.

I had "NO" choice, so I ignored the doctor's orders and started working on friends' cars in our garage at our house. In 2 years, I turned my hobby into a business. At the end of the 2 years, I had enough customers to open Complete Car Care.
In 1985, we mortgaged our home and moved into my present location at 5787 W. Barstow. This was the hardest thing I HAVE EVER DONE!!

In 1985, if I had known that I would survive 41 years, I would have been pleased. If I had known how hard it was going to be, I would have looked for an easier path. All the Math & Science I took during my school days was what saved me. A vehicle is Math & Science.

God blessed us, and for the past 41 years I have made my living doing my hobby.
