We recently had the opportunity to welcome Elijah Lewis with WCMU’s Great Lakes Jobs Explained to Regen Trucking School! Elijah spent some time with us getting a behind-the-scenes look at CDL training and talking with some of our participants about their experience.

There’s a lot that goes into earning your CDL, from hands-on practice to learning the skills needed to safely operate a commercial vehicle. And having a CDL can open up additional opportunities in many careers within the trades.

🚛 Backing a tractor-trailer isn't as easy as it looks.

For many of our students, it's the first time they've ever sat behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, let alone backed one up with a trailer attached.

In Michigan, every Class A CDL student must learn three essential backing maneuvers:
✔️ Straight Line Back
✔️ Offset Back
✔️ Alley Dock

Each one builds on the last, helping students develop the control, patience, and confidence needed to safely maneuver a tractor-trailer.

The Alley Dock is often the maneuver that takes the most practice. It challenges students to think differently, make steering corrections, and remember that when backing a trailer, what feels natural isn't always what the trailer will do. It can be frustrating at first, but it's also one of the most rewarding skills to master.

That's why our instructors work closely with students, coaching them through every adjustment until it finally clicks. Watching that moment when a student successfully backs into an alley dock for the first time never gets old.

🚛 Class A vs Class B CDL — what’s the difference, and which one should you choose?

If you’re starting a career in trucking, this is one of the first decisions you’ll make—and it comes down to vehicle type, weight rating, and the kind of driving work you want to do.

In this clip, you’ll see a simple visual comparison between a Class B truck and a Class A combination truck.

👉 CDL CLASS B (Single Vehicle)
A Class B CDL allows you to operate single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more.
Examples include: dump trucks, box trucks / straight trucks, cement trucks, garbage trucks, and buses / transit vehicles.
Best for drivers who want local routes and more home-daily schedules.

👉 CDL CLASS A (Combination Vehicle)
A Class A CDL is required for combination vehicles where the trailer is over 10,000 lbs.
Examples include: tractor-trailers (semi trucks), flatbeds, refrigerated freight trucks, tankers, and long-haul or regional freight setups.
Best for drivers looking for higher earning potential and more route flexibility.

Class B = big single truck
