It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of Firefighter Mason Fercovic-Ortegel, who tragically died in an off-duty drowning incident at Lake Anna. Mason was only 24 years old.

This is a heartbreaking loss for Mason’s family, friends, coworkers, and our entire FREM family. We ask that you keep his family and everyone who knew and loved Mason in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Our department will stand beside Mason’s family and our members in the days ahead. We will do everything we can to support them, care for one another, and honor Mason and his service to our community.

Please continue to lift up Mason’s family, friends, and fellow department members.

Rest easy, Mason. You will not be forgotten.

Stephanie Myers was a devoted mother, a beloved daughter and sister, and someone whose life touched many people throughout the Fredericksburg region.

To honor her life and legacy, The Community Foundation established the Leumas Cares – Stephanie Myers Domestic Violence Victim Support Fund. Created in Stephanie’s memory, the fund provides hope and opportunity by connecting young people with resources and experiences that promote healing, growth, and long-term well-being.

“Stephanie had a caring spirit and a deep love for her family, especially her children,” said Reggie Samuel, CEO and Founder of The Leumas Group and a member of The Community Foundation’s Board of Governors. “This fund was created to honor her life by investing in young people who need support the most. We hope it serves as a lasting reminder that even in the face of tragedy, compassion can create opportunity, healing, and hope.”

Most junk cars end their lives quietly—but this one became a training tool for our local heroes!

We were happy to donate a vehicle to Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management for rescue training exercises. It was fascinating to watch the team practice the skills they use to save lives when every second counts.
