How about a little silliness this evening? This past week marked exactly 13 years in business overall in Frederick. We won’t mention my other operations (oh shut up Google! Nobody asked you anyways). There’s a fun little backstory to all of my exploits over that time period.

When I first got going 8/13/2013, I thought to myself, “All those pro sports teams get all of those hype videos in their stadiums and so forth. If they get one, I get one too, fair is fair”.

This was my choice for hype video and I replay it every year in the anniversary. Iconic scene from an American classic film, “Flight of the Phoenix”. I thought it was befitting for a business startup, don’t you?

But wouldn’t you know it? Tonight about an hour ago fate would have it. I literally lived this scene in real time. It was a car and not an airplane but the whole scenario was practically a carbon copy, with a vehicle stranded in a bad spot, no keys, a very upset owner, and her options beyond me were limited and not very good.

Well that won’t be happening. I got her out and she’s on the road tonight. 2023 RAV4 and the emulator got the car on and the rolling code was accepted. I had a compatible fob and it accepted it and the car started, remote and PEPS functioned, spare key cut, it’s a big deal.

Unlike the movie, no pullin’ needed. She was otherwise facing a tow to the dealer and they wouldn’t have done a thing until Monday at the earliest.

But the best part of all of this? I got to be Jimmy Stewart. What could be better than that?

Automotive locksmithing isn't just about cutting keys anymore.

Here's an interesting look behind the scenes at something most vehicle owners will never see.

This is the under-dash fuse/relay assembly and MICU (Multiplex Integrated Control Unit) removed from a 2008 Honda Odyssey. At first glance, it looks like a big fuse box—and that's certainly part of its job. But there's considerably more going on here.

The MICU is part of a network of electronics responsible for controlling and communicating with numerous systems throughout the vehicle. When something goes wrong in this area, the symptoms can seemingly have nothing to do with one another: locks, remotes, lighting, climate-control functions and other electrical systems can suddenly stop operating correctly.

In this particular case, water intrusion is suspected of causing problems with the original unit. A replacement is on its way, and we'll know considerably more once it's installed and tested.

Why am I sharing this?

Because automotive locksmithing and vehicle security are becoming increasingly intertwined with automotive electronics. Keys, immobilizers, control modules, vehicle networks, programming and diagnostics increasingly overlap.

It's also one of the reasons I continue investing in equipment and, more importantly, education. The goal at Francis' Keys isn't simply to know how to push the right buttons on a programmer. It's to keep developing a better understanding of what's happening inside the vehicle when those buttons are pushed.

We'll see what happens when the replacement arrives. Stay tuned.

One other interesting part of this repair is the economics.

Replacing a module like this through conventional new-parts channels can become an expensive repair very quickly. The assembly isn't particularly easy to remove and install, a new OEM unit can cost several hundred dollars, and labor and programming can push the total considerably higher.

A carefully selected used module from a donor vehicle can potentially reduce that cost dramatically—but there are some important caveats:

1. Fix the reason the original module failed.

These Odysseys can develop water intrusion in this area. Installing another module without addressing the leak risks damaging the replacement too.

2. A used electronic module is always somewhat of a gamble.

A donor unit may have been exposed to moisture or other problems during its previous life, even if it looks fine externally.

3. Installation may involve more than simply plugging it in.

When replacement modules interact with vehicle security and immobilizer systems, key/immobilizer registration or programming may be required. That's where having the proper equipment and knowledge becomes important.

4. Where the donor vehicle lived can matter.

For this particular repair, I deliberately didn't source the replacement locally. It's coming from an automotive recycler in Rancho Cordova, California.

Why California?

The Sacramento area has a considerably drier climate than Maryland. That doesn't guarantee a perfect used module, but when I'm buying an electronic component that can be damaged by water intrusion, I'd rather stack the odds in my favor and source it from a dry-climate vehicle.

Sometimes repairing modern vehicles isn't simply about finding the right part. It's about understanding why the original failed, what the replacement requires, and how to make the smartest repair possible.

This customer purchased a used 2024 Kia Sorento with only one key. After previous attempts elsewhere were unsuccessful, we supplied and programmed a genuine OEM Kia smart key, cut the emergency key correctly, and paired it to the vehicle.

Many newer vehicles require secure credentialed access and specialized equipment. That’s why we invest in OEM procedures, NASTF authorization, and professional programming tools.

Just some news and notes on programming. Outside of dealer software, the most reputable programmers on the market are Autel, with AutoProPad/XTool a solid second place.

There is a problem with Autel though that has been the bane of our existence. No All Keys Lost ability for Toyota. That’s a problem because Autel’s servers historically are the most reliable and rock solid ones out there. With only Add A Key functionality, that really puts a crimp on all of us.

There is good news. An independent company named “FixMyIM” has figured out a workaround. It’s not free and costs anywhere from $80 to a few hundred depending on your equipment, but they have figured out the system and can restore this function. It’s not a hack but an actual removal of the software block. The Autel programmers still have the software on-board, it’s just hidden and not accessible. They can turn it back on.

There is a caveat though. FixMyIM says they can only guarantee it with the version of firmware your unit is currently on. If you update, it may not stick. They’re recommending leaving it where it is. That’s not too big a deal except remember, a year or two out and new cars come along and may have new systems. Generally I find that immobilizer systems tend to be used for several model years, so it’s not a big big deal.

Will I do it? I need to think about it. My Xtool and Lonsdor still handle AKL, but only up to about 2023 and sometimes 2024. I’m also hearing that the newest Lonsdor programmer may be even better at it than Autel. Plus many newer vehicles are dealer software only, so I need to weigh my options.

But overall this is a good thing and gives us more potential abilities that were previously cut off. But the question remains as to why Autel took the function away in the first place?

They were forced to by Toyota. Apparently there’s been complaints of vehicle theft, as a powerful programmer is capable of generating keys fairly quickly. Toyota demanded Autel comply and they did. Obviously it involves liability beyond what we need to worry about. But it is a factor. For every Francis’ Keys, there’s about 100 unlicensed operators out there.
