๐Ÿ”ง VEHICLE VALUE MYTH MONDAY
MYTH: โ€œMy vehicle was repaired perfectly, so its value must be exactly what it was before the accident.โ€
FACT: Repair quality and market value are two different questions.

A quality repair addresses the physical damage caused by a collision, but when that vehicle returns to the market, its accident history may still be information a potential buyer considers. That's where diminished value enters the conversation.

The question isn't simply: โ€œWas the vehicle repaired?โ€ It's also: โ€œHow does the market view this vehicle after the accident and repair?โ€

A great repair can restore a vehicle physically without automatically answering the question of market value.

๐Ÿš— Want to protect your vehicle's value? Start before you're ready to sell it โ€” and long before an accident happens.

A few simple habits can help preserve the condition and history of an asset you own:
๐Ÿ”ง Stay current on maintenance. Taking care of the vehicle helps preserve its condition.
โœจ Address minor damage. Dings, scratches, wheel damage and interior wear can accumulate over time.
๐Ÿงน Take care of the interior and exterior. Condition is part of the vehicle you're eventually asking someone else to value.
๐Ÿงพ Keep the records. Save maintenance, repair and service documentation instead of trying to reconstruct the vehicle's history later.
๐Ÿ“ธ Document the condition. Periodically photograph the exterior, interior, wheels and odometer.

You can't stop a vehicle from depreciating, but you can take care of what you own โ€” and preserve a record of how you've cared for it. Maintain it. Document it. Know its value.

๐Ÿš— Your vehicle was repaired after an accident. But did the accident change what it's worth? That's the question behind a diminished value analysis.

Not every accident creates a viable diminished value claim, but there are several questions that can help determine whether it's worth investigating:
โ˜‘๏ธ Who was at fault? The type of claim and available recovery options can depend on the circumstances.
โ˜‘๏ธ Was the vehicle repaired? Diminished value generally looks at potential market-value loss that remains after repairs.
โ˜‘๏ธ Did the vehicle have significant prior accident or damage history? Its pre-loss history can matter when determining how much value may have been affected by the new loss.
โ˜‘๏ธ When did the accident happen? Potential claims can be subject to state-specific deadlines.

Checking these boxes doesn't automatically mean you have a claim โ€” and an unchecked box doesn't necessarily answer the question by itself. But if your repaired vehicle may now be worth less because of its accident history, it's worth understanding the numbers.

๐Ÿ“– VEHICLE VALUE MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: โ€œI looked up the book value, so I know exactly what my vehicle is worth.โ€
FACT: A vehicle pricing guide can provide useful information โ€“ but a guide value isn't automatically an appraisal of your specific vehicle.

Your actual vehicle has its own:
๐Ÿš— Configuration
โš™๏ธ Trim + equipment
๐Ÿ”ข Mileage
โœจ Condition
๐Ÿ“‹ History

And value exists within an actual market.

There's nothing wrong with looking up a guide value. Just understand what that number does โ€“ and doesn't โ€“ tell you. A reference point isn't the same thing as a complete valuation analysis.

๐Ÿš— โ€œIt still runs. How could it possibly be a total loss?โ€

Because a total-loss decision isn't based on whether the engine starts โ€” or even how dramatic the damage looks from the outside. What appears to be relatively limited exterior damage may involve more once the vehicle is inspected and repairs begin.

Behind the visible damage could be additional affected components, structural considerations, electronics, sensors or other repair requirements that weren't apparent during the initial inspection. And every additional repair operation changes the economics.

The real question isn't simply: โ€œCan this vehicle still be driven?โ€ It's: โ€œWhat will it actually take to properly repair this vehicle โ€” and how does that compare with its pre-loss value?โ€

Sometimes the most important damage isn't obvious from the parking lot.

๐Ÿš— Were you in a Texas accident in 2024?

You may want to look at the calendar. A properly repaired vehicle can still be worth less in the marketplace because of its accident history. That loss is known as diminished value. And waiting to investigate it can matter.

Texas generally has a two-year statute of limitations for claims involving injury to personal property. That means some Texas drivers involved in accidents during 2024 may be approaching an important deadline.

If you think your vehicle lost market value after an accident, don't wait until you're ready to sell or trade it to start asking questions. Find out whether diminished value exists while you still have time to evaluate your options. Deadlines and eligibility can depend on the circumstances of the claim. This information is educational and isn't legal advice.

๐Ÿš— VEHICLE VALUE MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: โ€œThey're the same year, make and model, so they should be worth the same.โ€
FACT: Not necessarily.

Two vehicles that look almost identical in a search result can be very different once you look closer.

Consider:
โš™๏ธ Trim level
๐Ÿ”ง Factory equipment + packages
๐Ÿ”ข Mileage
โœจ Condition
๐Ÿ“‹ Vehicle history
๐Ÿš™ Configuration
๐Ÿ“ Market differences

That's also why finding a few vehicles online with the same year, make and model doesn't automatically establish what your vehicle is worth.

Vehicle identification is the starting point; valuation requires the details.

When was the last time you photographed your vehicle? Not because you're selling it or because itโ€™s damagedโ€ฆjust to document what you have today.

During National Preparedness Month, take 10 minutes to create a current record of your vehicle:
๐Ÿ“ธ Photograph all four sides and the interior.
๐Ÿš— Capture the wheels, trim and major equipment.
๐Ÿ”ข Photograph the odometer.
๐Ÿงพ Save maintenance and repair records.
๐Ÿ”ง Keep receipts for upgrades, accessories and significant work.
๐Ÿ“ Store everything somewhere you can access even if the vehicle is damaged or
unavailable.

Why? After a major loss, you may need to establish what your vehicle was like before it happened. Memories aren't documentation. Know your vehicle. Document its condition. Preserve its history โ€” before you need to prove any of it.

A vehicle valuation isn't just a number. It's a conclusion built from information.

A Vehicle Value Analysis (VVA) report is designed to look beyond year, make and model โ€“ examining the details of the specific vehicle and the market evidence surrounding it.

Inside a VVA report, that analysis may include:

๐Ÿ”Ž Vehicle identification and configuration
โš™๏ธ Factory equipment, options and packages
๐Ÿ”ข Mileage and condition
๐Ÿš— Comparable vehicles
๐Ÿ“ Relevant market data
๐Ÿงฎ Adjustments and valuation analysis

Why does that level of detail matter?

Because two vehicles that look nearly identical on paper can differ in equipment, mileage, condition and other characteristics that affect how they compare in the market.

A VVA report brings those pieces together to provide a data-driven analysis of vehicle value โ€“ and, importantly, information that helps you understand how that value was determined.

The final number matters. So does understanding what's behind it.

๐Ÿงพ VEHICLE VALUE MYTH MONDAY

MYTH: โ€œI've spent thousands maintaining my vehicle, so all that money gets added to its value.โ€
FACT: Maintenance expenses don't automatically increase market value dollar-for-dollar.

Oil changes, tires, brakes and other maintenance help keep a vehicle operating and can help preserve its condition. And maintenance records can provide useful documentation of the vehicle's history.

But spending $4,000 maintaining a vehicle doesn't automatically make it worth $4,000 more. Think of maintenance as helping protect what you own, rather than creating a dollar-for-dollar return. Save those receipts anyway. They tell part of your vehicle's story.
