Every repair tells a story.

When we're called aboard to perform a touch-up repair, one of the first things we try to understand is how the damage occurred.
→ A hoover/vacuum
→ A luggage bag
→ A worker
→ A tool

Sometimes we even encounter unusual staining or residue that requires a little investigation before repairs can begin. Could it be from...
→ a spray that is used (hair spray, perfume)
→ sunblock
→ lotions
→ cleaning product used

Understanding the cause provides value because it allows us to share valuable lessons with captains, crew, and yacht managers.

Over the years, we've identified common sources of damage that many people don't realize can affect painted, metallic, wood-grain, and other surfaces onboard.

There are times when nobody can determine the cause....but we typically have a plan to fix.

Our goal isn't just to repair the damaged area. It's to help prevent the same issue from happening again—whether on the yacht we're working on today or another vessel.

This mark was on a fabric wall in the beach club.

The crew had already tried cleaning it, but it wasn't going anywhere, so they gave us a call.

We always start with the least abrasive option and test a small area first. When it comes to fabric cleaners, some can leave a residue or stain.

This is why we don’t recommend crew attempt to use these types of cleaners themselves and rather let us do it.

When the fabric cleaners couldn't get the mark off, Caren tried lightly sanding the area to see if it was something sitting on the surface. It still didn't budge so she took a different approach and faux-painted the damaged area back into the surrounding fabric.

This yacht is heavily used and didn't have the time to replace any panels.
Faux painting was the best solution for this yacht's program because we could make the damage much less noticeable within the short timeframe they had available.

How long does Ceramic Coating last on a yacht's interior?

It really comes down to how much the surface is being used and how much it's being cleaned.

If we Ceramic Coat a bar top and that bar is used on every trip, with the stews wiping it down 2, 3, 4, even 5 times a day, there's a good chance it's going to need to be redone sooner.

But there's an easy trick to know if your Ceramic Coating is still working…→ Put some water on the surface. If it pills up into those little beads of water, the coating is still doing its job:
✓ Protecting the PPF
✓ Repelling fingerprints, dust and debris
✓ And making the surface easier to clean

If the water just sits flat on the surface, it's probably time for a refresher coat.

So, rather than going by a set amount of time, I always look at what the surface is doing.

We also leave our clients with a bottle of XPEL Ceramic Coating Boast so they can give the surface a little boost and keep it performing until they're back in South Florida and we can do a new application.

How long does Paint Protection Film last?

That's a very loaded question because it really depends on the use of the boat.

PPF can last for years.…

But how long it lasts on a particular surface really comes down to how much that surface is being used.

For example, if you've got a yacht where everyone always sits at the aft deck table and hardly ever uses the dining table, then obviously the dining table is going to last longer than the aft deck table.

Or, if you're always using the bar for drinks, games, whatever it might be, that daily use is going to take more of a toll and you'll start to see the wear on the PPF.

PPF doesn't necessarily need replacing because it's old. It usually needs replacing because it's done its job.

A few things I look for are:
→ Scratches and scuffs
→ Dulling or loss of clarity
→ Staining or marks that won't clean off
→ And, of course, damage that has penetrated the film

If you're seeing wear on the film, that's a GOOD sign. It means the PPF has taken the damage instead of your expensive surface; and it’s finally time to replace it.

P.S. If you have any other questions about PPF, feel free to ask me in the comments and I'll reply.

Why We Prefer to Complete Touch-Up Repairs at the End of a Refit

One of the most common questions we receive is why we recommend performing touch-up repairs at the very end of a refit project rather than throughout the process.

The answer is simple......damage continues to occur as long as active work is being performed onboard.

Contractors, technicians, vendors, deliveries, tools, equipment, and materials are constantly moving through the vessel. Even with the best precautions, increased foot traffic and ongoing activities create opportunities for new scratches, dents, scuffs, chips, and surface damage to occur.

By waiting until major work is complete, the yacht is typically cleaner, dust levels are significantly reduced, protective coverings have been removed, and furniture, cabinetry, wall panels, and interior components (lights etc...) have been reinstalled in their final positions. This allows us to see the complete scope of damage and address everything at one time rather than repairing an area only to have additional damage occur days later.

Performing repairs at the end of the project also reduces the need for multiple return visits, resulting in a more efficient process, and a more consistent final appearance.

Our goal is to leave the yacht looking its best when contractor traffic has ended and the vessel is truly ready for a guest/boss trip or delivery.

It’s still a few weeks until FLIBS but they’re already starting to build!

I was at Pier 66 the other day to walk a client’s yacht and the tents were already going up.

It’s that time of year again… I guess time flies when your head is down working. We’ve been busy getting some of our clients’ vessels ready for the show.

We’re doing touch-up repairs, PPF installations, and Ceramic Coating to make sure the yacht’s interior surfaces are protected and looking their best before owners, guests, and potential buyers step on board come October 28th.

Who else is getting ready for FLIBS?

P.S. If you’re in South Florida and in need of touch-up repairs, PPF, or Ceramic Coating before the boat show, feel free to send me a DM or reach out on WhatsApp so we can schedule a free walkthrough: +1 (315) 391-5017.🛥️

PPF doesn't always have to look glossy.

For this exterior coffee table, the owner chose matte Paint Protection Film (PPF), which keeps the original satin look of the surface while adding a layer of protection.

We offer both high-gloss and matte PPF, so you can choose the finish that works best for the surface and the look you want

On an exterior table like this, PPF helps protect against:
→ Sun and weather exposure
→ Scratches from watches, glasses and décor
→ Everyday wear from general use, cleaning and maintenance

The best thing about PPF is that you don't have to choose between protecting a surface and keeping the look you love.

You can have both.

And if you prefer a matte finish, you can protect the surface without making it glossy.

P.S. Which would you choose for your yacht, matte or high-gloss?
P.P.S.If you can’t quite decide, don’t worry. We also offer free samples of both finishes if you'd like to see them for yourself.

Counter edges, cabinet edges, door frames, door corners, and high-traffic trim pieces absorb constant wear and tear from daily use.

Crew members carrying supplies, luggage moving through passageways, service carts, vacuum cleaners, cleaning equipment, and even simple foot traffic can gradually chip, dent, scratch, and wear these surfaces over time.

Because edges are exposed and frequently contacted, they tend to show damage long before the flat surfaces around them. What starts as a small nick can quickly become a larger cosmetic issue if left unaddressed.

Regular maintenance by a skilled touch-up artist helps keep these areas looking their best while preventing minor damage from becoming more noticeable or requiring costly refinishing in the future.

Small repairs performed routinely are often faster, less invasive, and more economical than waiting until damage accumulates.

At Weingarth Customs, we often recommend incorporating touch-up repairs into a yacht's regular interior maintenance schedule.

Keeping these interior areas in excellent condition helps preserve the overall appearance, value, and presentation of the vessel throughout the year.

We received this lovely testimonial from Captain Tyler after working on his 120ft yacht. I was especially happy to read:

"I cannot even tell where [the 50 spots] were anymore."
That’s exactly what we want with every single repair we do!

But Tyler also mentioned a few things that have nothing to do with the actual repair, and it was really nice to know he noticed them.

→ Being on time.
We’re always punctual and arrive on board when we say we will.
But we also put a lot of effort into planning the work properly so we stay on schedule and meet our deadline.

We know how many other people are working around us on a yacht, so we never want to be the reason someone else's schedule gets pushed back.

→ Communicating well.
I'm probably guilty of over-communicating sometimes, but I'd much rather send a WhatsApp or make a quick call than leave someone wondering what's happening.

I want our clients to know what to expect before we start and if anything changes along the way.

→ Being fairly priced.
Nobody likes feeling like they've been overcharged.

I want our clients to feel like they're getting good value for the work we're doing.

→ Making life easier.
Captains and crew already have enough to deal with.

If they're bringing us on board to solve a problem, the last thing we want to do is create another one for them.

Of course, doing a good repair is the job. But being good to work with is something we have to deliberately choose to do every day.
