Another update from Mel’s Service Station!
Progress continues on restoring the station following June’s fire, although we’ve encountered some additional challenges along the way.
Fortunately, our underground fuel storage tanks were unaffected and will remain in place. However, the electrical systems serving the fuel pumps, tanks, and dispensing equipment have presented a much more complicated situation.
Earlier in the restoration process, our electrical contractor determined that the existing wiring could not safely be reused due to the potential extent of fire-related damage, the specialized electrical connections involved, and current safety requirements.
Following that assessment, our insurance company requested additional exploratory excavation to investigate the underground infrastructure.
The additional excavation and investigation required the removal of existing infrastructure to access the electrical conduit, including portions of the fuel piping, containment systems, and concrete dispensing islands. Some of these components cannot be reused once removed, requiring additional materials and replacement work to properly restore the fuel system.
These additional steps have increased the complexity, expense, and time involved in getting the station operational again. Much of this work isn’t readily visible, but it’s essential to restoring the facility safely and properly.
Despite the challenges, repairs are progressing nicely, and we’re committed to getting Mel’s back up and running as soon as possible.
We sincerely appreciate everyone’s continued patience and support and look forward to welcoming you back!
