💥 CP3 CARNAGE — AND IT STILL RAN! 💥

This Dodge 5.9 Cummins came in with a massive fuel leak, and once we tracked it down, we found a failure you definitely don’t see every day.

The CP3 high-pressure fuel pump internally came apart and actually blew the freeze plugs out of the pump, allowing fuel to pour out.

The crazy part? The truck STILL RAN! 😳

A CP3 is responsible for supplying the high-pressure fuel the common-rail injection system needs to operate. When something goes wrong internally, the results can get interesting fast—and this one definitely made a mess.

We’ll be replacing the failed CP3 and making sure the rest of the fuel system checks out before this 5.9 goes back on the road.

Just another reminder: a running truck doesn’t always mean a healthy truck.

🔧 A Water Pump Failure We’ve NEVER Seen Before!

We’ve replaced a lot of water pumps over the years, but this was a first.

This truck came in after losing all of its coolant, and once we got into it, we found the culprit—the back cover of the water pump had completely popped off, allowing the cooling system to dump its coolant.

Definitely not your typical water pump failure! 😳

Just another reminder that sometimes the problem isn’t what you expect—and good diagnostics matter.

“YOUR WIRE HAS AN AIR LEAK” 🤔💨🔌

That’s not a sentence you get to say every day.

While chasing an air leak on a fire engine, we found something you definitely don’t see very often: air leaking out of an electrical connector through the wire insulation.

The source was a failed air pressure switch. Instead of keeping the air isolated where it belongs, the switch failed internally and allowed pressurized air to enter the electrical side of the switch. From there, the air traveled inside the wire insulation and made its way down the harness until it escaped through the electrical connector.

So yes… the wire literally had an air leak. 😂

This is a great example of why some problems take more than simply finding where you can hear the leak. The actual failure can be several inches—or even feet—away from where the air finally escapes.

When it comes to electrical, air, hydraulic, and computer-controlled systems on modern equipment, sometimes the problem is exactly as weird as it looks.

🚒 Another Fire Engine in the Shop Today! 🔧

Today we’re diagnosing an issue with a fire engine that has been experiencing problems transitioning between pump mode and road mode.

This particular system uses a fairly complex sequence of controls. An air-operated switch sends a signal through electric air-pressure switches to a control module, which then commands solenoids that operate an air cylinder responsible for the pump/road mode transition.

We’ve been dealing with repeated air-pressure sensor failures, which can leave the truck unable to engage pump mode—or, just as importantly, unable to transition back into road mode.

When you’re working on emergency equipment, these systems have to operate reliably every time they’re called upon. Finding the root cause instead of simply replacing failed components is critical.

This truck also has an air leak we’ve been chasing for a while, and we finally have more to share on that one. I’ll be posting a video later because the way this leak is presenting itself is pretty wild.
