The German automaker VW maybe forced to buy back up to 500,000 vehicles as a result of their cheating scandal.

Volkswagen has reached a deal with U.S. authorities to settle the case over its cheating of diesel emissions tests that would involve it paying each affected customer $5,000, Germany's Die Welt newspaper reported today.

The news from the mechanic was grim: our friend's car had probably suffered a broken timing belt. The car quit while driving down the highway. One minute they were cruising along, then the next minute the engine had completely stopped and they were coasting (thank goodness it was an automatic transmission).
