Ryan Scott, Ryan mess, Ryan whatever. Northern edge diesel, tune my truck whoever he even goes by or other alias he may have purchased a trans from me for a 5th gen almost 2 years ago now. First let me start off by saying I have over an hour of recorded conversation of him admitting to everything im sharing here. Anyway, Beginning of fall he calls me about a trans thats loading the engine in reverse. I tell him sounds like its dragging the converter. Could be a bad line pressure sensor, low on fluid or a sump issue. He says the customer is still driving it and has to get it from him. He calls me a few weeks after that and says he put a new line pressure sensor in it and it still does the same thing. I said ok get me some data logs of it doing it. I need to see line pressure commanded, line pressure actual and line pressure duty cycle. He send me a log missing duty cycle I then tell him its missing duty cycle i need that to know the full scope. Sends me more logs again no duty cycle. So he then says he’s going to run the truck out to me. I asked him if he checked the fluid he says no. Later he tells me its 7” up the dipstick which is 5” OVERFUL! That alone will kill a trans! I told him it needs to be drained to the proper level. In the next week he drops drops the truck off later at night. Coming home from dinner I jump right in it with my scan tool and drive it. The trans shifts good, no slipping or shift concerns lockup works well. I come back from driving it and pop it in reverse and sure enough it lugs down like the converter is dragging and loads the engine. Open the correct pids and pop it in reverse at idle with my foot on the brake and desired line pressure goes right to 250PSI. Now all 68 trucks stock file, aftermarket file, etc all command 120-160 in reverse on the brake at stall. This truck is commanding 250. A 68 womt make 250 in reverse at 640rpm there isn’t enough volume. They will command more as torque, load, and rpm increase as you press the throttle. The next couple days i talk to him and explain all this to him and tell him we have a tune issue and he goes “about that” and admits he has a tune issue. He then says hes going to send a file to try. I told him thats where we need to start. I told him I would do a service also. He never sent anything and 4 weeks later when I had the flu he messaged he was picking it up and came and picked up the truck while I had the flu. He retuned it with proven a week or two later and said its still doing it. Ok, so this is a 5th gen, 100% injectors, 63MM turbo, 10MM cp3, and all other supporting mods, maybe something is causing this for this build setup. I three way call with his customer and tell his customer I will refresh this unit for free. Keep in mind i didnt see the destruction in the pictures. Maybe something odd is happening here but it still shouldn’t be commanind 250 at idle in reverse. Anything is possible I just want to go through the trans while we have it out as they had decided it was a bad converter. I agreed the converter was likely damaged since it was dragging it due to the tune issue. In trying to figure this out I thought the converter may be dragging always changing torque load causing the higher commanded pressure Ryan says he will R&R trans and get it to me and i ordered another 68 converter the next day. A week goes by and ryan sends me a pic of one of the 60 vb screws on the magnet when they went to drain it. I said thats odds but ive seen it a couple times over the years. Keep in mind I still havent seen the trans out. So I tell him get it to me and we will fugure it all out. I had the converter, still planned on refreshing it for free, just needed the trans. He then doesn’t pull the trans and tells me I screwed it up its my fault hes not pulling it he putting the old fluid back in and dropping it off. Thank God he did! He says he’s done with it I can deal with jordan his customer from here on out and told his customer the same tbing. So he drove it from Binghamton to me here in fonda dropped it late at night. At this time I stopped all communication with him. I then pulled the trans and found it completely torched! It takes 600 degrees to turn metal blue! It was so hot it melted the aluminum pump! No wonder it popped a screw loose to the solenoid body. It has a plastic screen plate between it and the valve body. It was molten metal hot plastic stands no chance. Like Dave G said whats the first thing you grab to losten a screw a torch. Well e without talking to anyone I took lots of pictures and recorded any conversations. I rebuilt the trans trans, which surprisingly the clutches weren’t toast, put a new converter in it and put it all back in. Put a new thermostat block and drove it. Trans shifted as it should. Got back and monitored data again and same old issue. Commanding 250 psi in reverse at idle. At the same time i had a stock 5th gen in for a turbo actautor. Went drove it and popped it in reverse 160psi desired. So its a truck/flash issue. This is why im glad the whole truck came back to me! So after spending hours upon hours with proven we finally figured out what was going on. The injection mass to torque table (changed for the 100% injectors) was causing it to jump to a higher estimated torque number causing it to jump to 250 in reverse. The stock truck was estimating 130-160LBFT at idle in reverse. This truck was well over 200LBFT. Over a dozen revisions later the trucks now shifts, runs and drives better than it ever did! Oh btw, I still refreshed tbe trans for the customer for free. However, I did charge for a new pump and converter at my cost. Glad to have this figured out and the end customer his truck back! Since then Ryan M**h or w/e had been harrasing me! Ill throw some of his screenshots in the comments!
