DYK? Those little bumps on sidewalk curb ramps are called truncated domes, and they serve to warn those who are visually impaired that they are about to leave the sidewalk and enter a street. The bumps can be felt with a white cane and under your feet.

SAFETY SUCCESS: An intersection in Oneida County saw a large decrease in crashes after being converted from a signalized intersection into a roundabout.

In the six years before the project was completed, there were 40 total crashes at the intersection of US 8 and WIS 47 near Rhinelander. In the six years after the roundabout was installed, there were 23 total crashes – about a 42% reduction.

Due to their design, roundabouts reduce vehicle speeds along with high-risk conflict points, resulting in fewer fatal and severe injury crashes. They also keep traffic flowing compared to signalized intersections.

This project is a great example of improved safety through data-driven engineering solutions.

Animal-drawn vehicles are a common sight in some areas of rural Wisconsin. During Rural Road Safety Awareness Week, we’re reminding drivers to avoid dangerous situations with animal-drawn vehicles:

• Slow down
• Pay attention to the road
• Stay patient
• Only pass in passing zones

When you're passing a bicyclist on the road, 3 feet is the minimum buffer distance required by law in most states.
