If you've never seen Toledo Bend in person, it's difficult to understand just how enormous it feels.

This isn't some little Louisiana fishing lake.
Toledo Bend Reservoir stretches along the Louisiana-Texas border and covers roughly 185,000 acres at full pool.

The reservoir was created by damming the Sabine River during the 1960s, with the Toledo Bend Project developed jointly by Louisiana and Texas.
What resulted was one of the largest reservoirs in the United States.
And Louisiana fishermen definitely noticed.

Toledo Bend became famous for bass fishing, with anglers traveling from across the country to fish its waters.
But you don't need a fishing rod to understand why people keep coming back.

There are miles of wooded shoreline.
Quiet coves.
Boating.
Camping.
Cabins.
Sunsets that seem to stretch across the entire horizon.

And enough water that there are moments when Toledo Bend looks more like an inland sea than a reservoir.

Louisiana operates two state parks along its shoreline: North Toledo Bend State Park and South Toledo Bend State Park.

Both offer visitors a way to experience a completely different side of Louisiana from the swamps and bayous most outsiders picture.
This is pine country.

Rolling terrain.
Clearer horizons.
Big water.
And some serious fishing.
The funniest part?

You can launch a boat from Louisiana, cross the reservoir and end up in Texas.
Just don't let Texas claim all the fish.
We'll need some of those back.

Always one of my favorite photos on Toledo Bend, for the nostalgia of it all. It tells such a story… about a massive lake created from the waters of the Sabine River in the 1960s in part for the recreation of it all. Louisiana (Sportsman’s Paradise) joined with Texas in the massive Toledo Bemd Dam project. Among other stories the photo tells: the lake filled a lot faster than planned or expected… much of the timber was not cut by the time heavy rains escalated the filling of the lake… and for the first few years of the lake’s existence, this photo illustrates the joy and pain of fishing the lake. Trolling motors got one from place to place as they carefully navigated the remains of forests which had covered the land which was now covered by the water… but the fishing was spectacular from what I have heard.

Please feel free to share stories (recalled or passed down) of fishing the lake in its early days. I love to hear these stories!

This photo is from the Louisiana State Library’s digital archives.
