Casper was only 21 months old when a pack of 11 coyotes surrounded the sheep he was guarding in Decatur, Georgia, in November 2022. Instead of backing away, the Great Pyrenees charged straight toward them.
Five sheep were inside the enclosure, along with Casper’s fellow guardian dog Daisy. By the time the fight ended, Casper had killed eight coyotes and chased the remaining three away. Every sheep survived.
Then Casper disappeared.
For two days, owner John Wierwille searched for him, fearing he had not survived. Casper eventually returned on his own with severe wounds, torn skin and injuries so serious that part of his tail had to be amputated.
His veterinary care cost around $15,000, with LifeLine Animal Project helping raise the money needed to save him.
But Casper was not finished being a guardian.
After months of recovery, he healed and eventually returned to the sheep he had nearly given his life protecting. By 2023, his owner said Casper was once again out with the animals doing the job he loved.
Casper disappeared after protecting his flock badly enough injured that his family feared they had lost him. He came back two days later, survived, healed, and ultimately returned to stand beside those same sheep again.
