Does DEF freeze?

Yes around 12°F. Every modern diesel has a heated DEF tank and lines designed for that, and the truck won't fault just because it froze overnight. The problem is when the heater circuit fails and you get a derate on a cold morning.

Worth checking before January.

Tread depth matters more once temperatures drop and so does tire age. Rubber hardens as it ages, which costs you grip in the cold regardless of how much tread is left. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall, not just the tread.

When should you check your 4x4 before the snow, or during it?
Before. Most 4x4 problems show up the first time it's engaged after sitting unused all summer: a stuck transfer case actuator, a bad front axle disconnect, a worn shift motor.
Engage it now in a parking lot. If anything binds, grinds, or won't go in, get it looked at while it's still 50 degrees out.

Why does my diesel crank slow when it gets cold?

Usually batteries. Diesels need far more starting amperage than gas engines, and most trucks run two batteries if one is weak, both struggle. Glow plugs, a failing grid heater, or thickened oil can also be the cause.

A load test takes minutes and tells you before you're stuck.

Diesel cold-start season starts now.

Before the first hard freeze, get the batteries load-tested, glow plugs or grid heater checked, and the block heater cord inspected. Diesels pull serious amperage to start cold — a battery that was fine in September often isn't in December.
