When Heath Ledger died, his 2 year old daughter wasn't named in his will.
Not because he had chosen to leave her out.
The document had simply been written before she existed. 💔
Heath signed his will in April 2003, when he was 24. At the time, he hadn't yet met Michelle Williams and Matilda wouldn't be born until October 2005.
The will left his estate to his parents and three sisters.
Then Heath died unexpectedly on January 22, 2008, at just 28.
Almost immediately, questions appeared about what would happen to Matilda.
His family's answer was clear.
His father, Kim Ledger, said Matilda was their “absolute priority.”
Months later, the family confirmed that they had decided to give Heath's entire estate to his little girl.
“Our family has gifted everything to Matilda.” ❤️
But another gesture was happening on the other side of the world.
When Heath died, he had not finished filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to portray different versions of Heath's character so the movie could be completed.
And according to director Terry Gilliam, the three actors chose not to keep their payment.
The money went to Matilda. 🥹
Gilliam also changed something else.
Where audiences would normally have seen his own name at the end of the film, another message appeared:
“A film from Heath Ledger and friends.”
Heath never had the chance to rewrite his will after becoming a father.
But the people around him made sure an old piece of paper did not decide his daughter's future.
His family protected what he left behind.
His friends helped finish his final work.
And Matilda remained at the center of both.
What do you think says more about a family than what they choose to do when they legally could have chosen differently?
