Quality Used Engines

This is a public service announcement.
DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!

Much to my shame and embarrassment, I recommended this company to a customer that needed an engine replacement. The company had the engine we needed and at a reasonable price. Furthermore, the engine came with a 5 year warranty!
However, that 5 year warranty is a sham!
The fine print in the warranty make it possible for the company to weasel its way out of ever having to stand behind their product.
The engine that was purchased was supposed to have less than 60k miles on it. But once it was received, I performed several tests on it. The tests showed that 1 cylinder was dead (no/very little compression).
After contacting Quality Used Engines, they refused to honor their warranty because the engine was not installed into the car.
Why would ANYONE install a used part into a car without testing it first? And once the testing failed, why would they install it at all??!
Now my customer is stuck with 2 engines that don't work. He told me to go ahead and rebuild the one he purchased, so I tore it down. The condition of the pistons indicates a very long life! There's no way that this much internal damage could occur in less than 60k miles!

Save yourself the trouble. Don't do business with these people!

Timing belt, water pump, all new seals, power steering pump and new drive belts.
This job lasted waaay longer than it should have. With a vendor putting the wrong parts in the right box, special order antifreeze and radiator hoses that blew during pressure testing, this is one job I'm happy to have complete!

Customer complained of an oil leak presenting near the transmission. Original diagnosis was likely a bad rear main seal....

Customer complained of an oil leak presenting near the transmission. Original diagnosis was likely a bad rear main seal. But after further inspection, I noticed that all the oil appeared to be on top of the transmission. Removal of the flywheel inspection plugs showed a perfectly dry flywheel.
So I looked at the back of the valve cover gaskets.... dry. Crankcase ventilation? Nope, all good. Where is this oil coming from?! The answer? The oil cooler; located under the intake and behind the alternator.
As you can see in this picture, there's almost two quarts of oil just sitting on top of the engine! The oil is so deep, that one of the knock sensors is completely submerged!
New knock sensors (just in case), new spark plugs (might as well, since I've got the intake off already), new o-ring seals for the oil cooler, a new oil cooler outlet hose (the one that was on it was starting to swell), new intake gaskets and an oil change..... all for less than $375!

All this.... just to replace spark plugs! Toyota strikes again!
