One thing I've noticed after years in the car business is that a lot of people don't actually understand how credit works and that's okay because nobody really teaches it.

I can't tell you how many people have sat across from my desk and said, "I have terrible credit," when in reality they just haven't had the chance to build it yet.

Your payment history is one of the biggest factors in your credit score. Paying your bills on time consistently is huge. Having a few different credit accounts can actually help too as long as you manage them responsibly.

A lot of people think the goal is to never have debt. That's not really how the system works. Lenders want to see that you can borrow money and pay it back consistently over time.

I'm not saying you should go out and take on debt you don't need. I'm saying if you understand how credit works, you'll put yourself in a much better position when it's time to buy a car, purchase a home, or finance just about anything.

Learning how credit works is one of the best investments you can make in yourself. It can literally save you thousands of dollars over your lifetime.

I see the difference every day.
