PSA: Is your check engine light on??
Fix why your check engine light is on immediately. Please read till the end.
I just had a customer have a breakdown on the way back from Tulsa. The jeep had no power at RPM and was knocking pretty bad.
It is always hard when you break down and have to figure out what is wrong. In this case the jeep already had a check engine light due to a O2 sensor. When i pulled the codes i had one for each O2 sensor on bank 1 and a p0300 random misfire. So after replacing both bad O2 sensors i was left with the misfire. After scanning i found misfires on cyl 1 and 4. With the Jeep 3.8, these two cylinders are on the same coil. So the issue would be either the coil pack or the control line from the PCM. After testing the control signal this issue was a bad coil pack.
So back to my comment on fixing the check engine light issues. In this case the O2 sensors could cause the misfiring. So those sensors needed to be replaced first. But the bad thing here is that after fixing everything, the next day it threw a code for a clogged Catalytic Converter. If the original check engine light was fixed several things might have not happened. The second O2 sensor would not have failed and the misfire could have been troubleshot faster, and the most costly issue would have not happened. The clogged Catalytic Converter. And the code for the clog could not happen until the O2 sensors were working so the computer could read the difference in outputs from the O2 sensors.
So please fix why your check engine light is on before things cascade. Also if your check engine light is on, you will know of any new codes that may have come up and lead to much costlier repairs.
The same applies to the low tire pressure sensor. You may not know of a real low tire if your tpms light is on. That could lead to a very bad situation. Imagine having a flat tire late at night on a dark road or a blowout at 70 mph on a front tire. Walmart replaces these sensors cheaper than any place i know.
Please do not drive around with dash warning lights. It could save your life in the end.
