Air Filter Oil And Mudslinger: The Off-Road Prep That Saves Your Engine

Every off-road engine failure has a story, and a surprising number of them start with the air filter. Dirt bikes, ATVs and UTVs run in exactly the conditions engines hate — airborne dust, sand, mud and water — and the only thing standing between all of that and your top end is a piece of foam.

Get the filter right and the rest of your maintenance gets easier. Here’s the pre-ride routine worth building.

Why a Foam Filter Has to Be Oiled

A dry foam filter is barely a filter. The foam’s job is to hold a tacky film that grabs dust and grit as air passes through; without oil, fine particles go straight past the element and into the engine, where they act like a slow grinding compound on cylinder walls and rings.

This is also why substituting motor oil is a bad idea. Purpose-built filter oil contains tackifiers that pe*****te the foam cells and stay put. Plain motor oil isn’t sticky enough — it drains toward the bottom of the element under gravity and heat, leaving the top of the filter effectively dry while you assume you’re protected.

AMSOIL Air Filter Oil

Confirm the filter seats properly with no gaps at the sealing surface
Check the airbox for pooled oil or standing water

Grease suspension and pivot points, especially before a wet ride
Check oil level and condition

What to Look for in an Authorized AMSOIL Dealer for Motorcycles

If you ride, you already know oil isn’t a commodity purchase. A V-twin running one lubricant through the engine, transmission and primary chaincase is asking a lot of that fluid — and where you buy it matters nearly as much as which bottle you choose.

Plenty of riders end up on a third-party marketplace listing, unsure who’s actually shipping the product or how long it sat in a warehouse. Here’s what buying from an authorized dealer gets you instead.

1. You Know the Product Is Genuine
