Some thing’s we at Devil Dog run into. Yes it’s been awhile. We did a new 5.9 Cummins engine swap. Owner wanted an upgrade. Upgrade known as “Boss Hoss” air intake. (View the video)
Another is a Lincoln Classic weld machine. Weld machine came in not running. Diesel injection pump assy as seized up. Replaced the diesel fuel injection pump & timed. Machine has not ran over 4 years. We cleaned out the fuel tank. It had more issues than just the injection pump. It kept going into shutdown. The electric fuel pump & injection pump shut off soleniod was hooked up in series. Reconnect them parallel. Furthermore, found the alternator was not charging. But it would stay running when alternator was disconnected. Reconnect it & it shuts down. Then we found out the amperes gauge was hooked up backwards.
This next issue was just due to observation. I’ve seen it happen on off road equipment. The fan blade was installed backwards.
Heres a DIY. Found diesel fuel injectors electrical harness loose connection. However it has 3 injectors out as well. Plus a turbo wastegate issues . All contributing to low power.
We also found a SUV turbo that was damaged due to “lack of maintenance.” It happens to diesel pickups as well. We had one the owner went out & started hisdiesel pickup. When he came out to leave. The engine was locked up.
Oil sludge will do a lot of damagd to your engine - gas or diesel.

Thought I’d share something interesting. You ever had a coolant system repair on your Duramax. Then you find out the engine vibrates. It never did that before. Some of these cooling system repairs require the crankshaft dampener be removed. This is basic stuff most service people know. The dampener is keyed or pinned. But humans do make mistakes. A Duramax has a pin in the crankshaft where the crankshaft dampener slides over the nose. The dampener is a snug fit where it does not require a puller to remove it. The crankshaft dampener is held in place with one center bolt. As you see in the photos the dampener was not positioned properly and was drawn on by force. This caused the dowel pin to shear. You can see the light surface gouge. As much torque is applied to the center mounting bolt. The dampener can still rotate slightly without a pin. This created a torsional vibration. Under a heavy load the crankshaft can & will TWIST in two. The positioning of a crankshaft dampener is critical.
We ended up drilling the broken pin out. Believe me. These pins are hardened. Now the question is where did the pin that sheared off go? As small as this pin is it can do costly engine damage.
If your Duramax engine is vibrating. There has to be a reason. It did not vibrate before. It just had coolant system repairs. Afterwards it started vibrating.
Drive safe & focus on the moment.

Let’s talk about diesel air intakes. All those nice colored intakes piping is eye catching. Look whats mounted at the end. These filters are only good inside your garage. These filters do more damage to your diesel engine. More than you realize. This is not for a dusty environment. Ive seen more engine failures due to these filter configurations.
Visualize this. That air filter is plugged up. What happens? You have seen this. A straw in a beverage with ice. You draw that drink & ice blocks the tip of the straw. You try hard to draw your drink. What happens to the straw? Yes it collapses. So when the air filter is plugged. What do you suppose happens? Just like the straw. Something has to give to equalize pressure. Due to pressure differentials what gives? The weakest link gives. What is the weakest link when the air intake connection fail to give. The turbo seals become the weakest link. Engine oil enters the low pressure of the air intake. Now you have engine oil being expelled into the turbo discharge. Where does that route too. Engine oil with hot air now enters the intercooler mounted in front of the radiator. The high discharge temperatures dissipates to the atmosphere via the intercooler. Anyone know the approximate temperature is when the air leaves the turbo discharge horn? This is basic knowledge. All diesel techs should know this.
So when the air filter is plugged like the one you see in the photo. Small dirt debris enters your intake. A mixture of engine oil & dirt debris flows down stream. It’s gritty mixture of OIL & DIRT. Is that what you want entering your $16k+ engine? Looks are deceiving. Look at these photos. This is the inlet & outlet of a intercooler. This not only causes low horsepower. It damages your engine. If you use these filter. WASH THEM. If not you’re better off with OEM filter configurations.

It’s been awhile. But I thought this may interest most diesel pick up owners. A Ford 6.0 arrives sounds like random misfires. But no codes. I’m sure many of you have been trained to do wiggle test. No not that! Fuel injector wiring harness wiggle test. This affected the fuel injector circuitry & you can hear the change in the operation of the engine. Take a look at the connector ends in the photo. Products of EBay are not what think it is. Look at the one on the right. You notice the sockets are slightly smaller than the one on the left. This is what creates a poor connection. This effect your injector circuitry & your diesel engine will sound like a random misfires.
Things purchased online sales is not what you think is quality. Yes I understand most people looking to cut cost. Sometimes it more costly.
Here’s another one. Diesel 6.4 Engine ran approximately 2k from Missouri. Now it has metal glitter throughout the l**e system. Again trying to save some $$.
A few weeks ago a diesel engine came in & found a rod sticking through the block. Busted the camshaft & destroyed the piston, cylinder & crank. Just cruising down the interstate south of Albuquerque & it lost power steering. Hum…did you hear anything? No it just quit & no steering. It just clicks when you try to start it. Wonder why?
The worst is people using KN filters in dusty conditions. I’ve seen more engine failures due to these filter. Just not designed for dusty road conditions.
