New gas cap and that check engine light is STILL on? 🐗 Easy, bud. Here's what's going on:
• A loose or bad gas cap can set an EVAP leak code (usually something like P0455 or P0457).
• Fixing the cap won't shut the light off right away. Your car's computer has to re-run its EVAP self-test over several drive cycles, so give it a few days of normal driving.
• Don't guess. Get the code read. A cheap OBD2 reader works, and lots of parts stores will read it for free.
• If the light comes back, it may be something else in the EVAP system, like a purge valve, a vent valve or a cracked hose. Get it checked.
• And if that light is ever FLASHING, that's not a gas cap problem. Get it looked at right away.

Deer season heads-up from the lot. 🦌

October and November are the worst months for deer collisions around NWA — they are moving most at dawn and dusk, right when everybody is headed to and from work. A few things that actually help:

Take it a little easier on the back roads when the light gets flat. Run your high beams whenever there is no oncoming traffic — you want to catch eyes reflecting way out ahead. And if one bolts across, brake hard but stay in your lane. Swerving into the ditch or the other lane turns a bad morning into a bad day.

While you are at it, make sure your headlights are actually bright and aimed right. Foggy fall mornings are no time for dim bulbs.

Cool-weather heads-up from the lot. 🌡️

Fall mornings are dropping into the 40s and 50s around here, and your tires feel it — tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees the temperature falls. A tire that was fine in September can be underinflated this week, and underinflated tires wear out faster and drink more gas.

Two-minute check: look at the sticker on your door jamb (not the sidewall) for your number, check them cold before you drive, and fill to spec. Do it first thing in the morning and you're set.

When you bring home a used car, what's the first thing you do with it — wash it top to bottom, fresh oil change, new tires, or do you just drive it and deal with it later?

I always start under the hood, but I've got customers who won't let a new-to-them ride touch their driveway dirty. Curious where everybody lands on this one.
