WHEN YOUR CAR ACCIDENTALLY BECOMES A TINY BATTERY

You don't always need traditional red rust for two parts to become seized together.

Sometimes the problem starts simply because two different metals are touching each other.

It's called galvanic corrosion.

🔬 Here's what's happening on a microscopic level:

When two dissimilar metals—such as steel and aluminum—are electrically connected and moisture containing dissolved salts gets between them, you've essentially created the conditions for a tiny electrochemical cell.

Yep. Your car is doing a little chemistry experiment without asking permission. 😂

⚡ Electrons begin moving between the metals.
Because the metals have different electrochemical potentials, one becomes more likely to give up electrons. That metal acts as the anode and corrodes preferentially, while the more noble metal acts as the cathode.

🧂 Then road salt joins the party.
Salt water is an excellent electrolyte, allowing ions to move more easily and helping the corrosion reaction along.

🪨 Corrosion products build up between the parts.
That buildup can pack incredibly tightly into small spaces. Aluminum corrosion often appears white, chalky, or crusty rather than the familiar reddish-brown rust you see on steel.

Eventually, a steel bolt passing through an aluminum component can become so thoroughly seized that:

🔥 Heat may be required.
🔨 Hammering or an air hammer may be required.
🪚 The bolt may have to be cut.
🛠️ Threads may need repaired.
💰 And sometimes another component has to be replaced simply because the two pieces will NOT separate.

🔩 HOW DOES RUST ACTUALLY SEIZE PARTS TOGETHER?

Ever wonder why a mechanic says, “It’s rusted fast” or “We may have to cut it out”?

Rust is doing a whole lot more than making the metal look ugly.

On a microscopic level, when iron or steel reacts with oxygen and moisture, it forms iron oxides—rust. And here’s the important part:

👉 That corrosion takes up more space than the original metal did.

When rust forms between two tightly fitted parts—like a bushing and control arm, a bolt and sleeve, or two suspension components—the corrosion products grow into the tiny spaces between them.

Think of it like millions of microscopic wedges being driven between the parts. 🔨

As corrosion continues, those wedges build up, create tremendous pressure and friction, and can eventually lock the pieces together so tightly that penetrating oil, an impact gun, heat, or even a press may not be enough.
