🔧 5 Things You Can Check Yourself BEFORE Panicking About That Check-Engine Light
1. Gas Cap – Seriously!�A loose or cracked gas cap triggers the light 1 out of every 10 times.�→ Turn it until it clicks 3–4 times. Drive a couple days. Light might go off by itself.
2. Look for the Easy Stuff
• Any new warning lights on the dash?
• Weird smells (sweet = coolant leak, rotten eggs = catalytic converter)?
• Rough idle or loss of power?�Write these down — it saves us 15–20 minutes of guessing.
3. Cheap OBD2 Scanner ($20 on Amazon)�Plug it under the dash (left of steering wheel). It spits out a code like P0301 or P0420.�Google the code + your car’s year/make → you’ll know if it’s minor or “park it now.”
4. When to Drive In Immediately (Red Flags)
• Light is flashing (misfire — can destroy your catalytic converter in minutes)
• Engine overheating
• Major loss of power or stalling
• Smoke from under the hood
