STATEMENT FROM THE FAIRFIELD POLICE DEPARTMENT REGARDING JUVENILE INCIDENT & ARRESTS:

FAIRFIELD, CT — The Fairfield Police Department is aware of a recent incident involving a group of juveniles in our community that took place on the evening of October 3, 2024. Our department responded to the situation following reports of an altercation and took appropriate action to ensure the safety of those involved. This incident has raised concerns within the community, and a video circulating on social media depicts a brief portion of the events that unfolded.

Through our investigation, it was determined that four juveniles engaged in ongoing verbal harassment and bullying behavior directed at a fifth juvenile. These actions, both in person and through phone communication, created an environment that ultimately led to an escalation when the bullied juvenile chose to retaliate by brandishing kitchen knives. While we understand the emotions and fear that might have contributed to this response, the Fairfield Police Department wants to make it clear that the use of a weapon or any form of violence is never an acceptable solution.

The department has filed appropriate charges against all juveniles involved, and they are scheduled to appear in juvenile court. At this time, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to student safety.

Fairfield Public Schools has been made aware of the incident to the extent allowable by law and is fully committed to supporting all students involved. The district will be conducting its own investigation according to its policies and procedures and encourages families to utilize the resources available for students facing challenges with bullying or harassment. The district’s policies provide for confidential reporting mechanisms, and any reports will be handled in a manner that prioritizes student safety and well-being.

We want to stress that bullying, whether on or off school grounds, is a serious issue that disrupts the well-being and safety of students. Likewise, responding to bullying through threats or physical harm can escalate the situation and lead to unintended consequences. The Fairfield Police Department and Fairfield Public Schools are dedicated to ensuring that incidents of bullying and retaliation are handled swiftly and appropriately.

This incident also serves as a reminder for all students and families that resources are available through both the school district and police department. We encourage anyone experiencing or witnessing bullying to report it immediately, either to school officials or the police, so it can be addressed before it escalates further.

We also want to remind the community that continually sharing videos or images of incidents like these on social media can cause undue harm to all parties involved, especially when the full context is not represented. These posts can escalate tensions, lead to increased bullying or harassment, and can negatively impact the emotional and psychological well-being of everyone. We urge the community to be mindful and respectful when discussing such matters online and to allow the appropriate authorities to handle the situation with the sensitivity it requires.

The Fairfield Police Department remains committed to ensuring a safe environment for all students and will continue to support Fairfield Public Schools in their efforts to maintain the safety and integrity of the learning environment.

Fairfield Restaurant Week will return from October 21 through November 3, 2024. The Town of Fairfield’s Office of Community & Economic Development is pleased to announce that the popular event, now in its thirteenth year, will make its return on Monday, October 21st and run through Sunday, November 3rd. More than two dozen restaurants are expected to participate in this year’s event with special prix fixe lunch and dinner menus showcasing their finest culinary offerings.

“We hope that residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy and support the many great restaurants that Fairfield has to offer,” stated Mark Barnhart, Fairfield’s Director of Community & Economic Development. This year’s event will again run two full weeks, giving patrons more time to visit their favorite eating establishments. The Town of Fairfield is pleased to have Fairfield University as a returning sponsor of this year’s event. “One of the many reasons why our students, faculty, and staff love being at Fairfield University is the diverse restaurants, eateries, and take-out establishments that the Town of Fairfield has to offer,” said Jennifer Anderson, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Fairfield University. “The Fairfield University community adds to the vibrancy of downtown and supports many local businesses throughout the year. We enjoy working with the Town and its Economic Development team to help promote Fairfield’s vibrant dining scene and all that there is to see and do in Fairfield.”

Mr. Barnhart added, “We are very appreciative of Fairfield University’s continued support of Fairfield Restaurant Week as well as our many other initiatives throughout the year. Fairfield University has been a terrific community partner and we are grateful for all that the University does to help make Fairfield such a great place to live, work, and play.” Full-service restaurants wishing to participate in Fairfield Restaurant Week or businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Mark Barnhart, Director of Community and Economic Development, at (203) 256-3120 or [email protected] for more information.
