In response to the unfortunate rail accidents last week, we'd like to share an important rail crossing safety tip:
In case of emergencies or safety concerns at a highway-rail grade crossing, FIRST call the railroad by using the information on the ENS sign at the grade crossing.
1. Locate the blue-and-white ENS sign at the grade crossing.
2. Call for help! Call the railroad’s emergency contact number listed on the ENS sign.
3. Communicate your location by providing the U.S. Department of Transportation National Crossing Inventory Number, which identifies the exact location of the crossing to the railroads, to the dispatcher as well as information on the emergency.
Call the railroad first in an emergency--they'll be best able to contact the train and tell it to stop. Do NOT try to wave down or shout to a train to stop it.
