It's always refreshing to see a well-maintained and clean engine when we do a reseal on it. Very little tarnish inside the engine indicates frequent and timely oil changes. The customer is addressing the upper oil pan O-ring issue before it turns into a bigger issue, saving herself thousands of extra dollars in work by addressing it when it first starts showing signs of failing. It's a great feeling to know this Forester will stay on the road for another 120,000 miles.

Our experience shows that upper oil pan oring failures are becoming more frequent during routine oil changes, potentially leading to cross-contamination at any time or mileage. The failures seem to be more time-dependent than mileage-dependent, especially in 2017-2020 models, and often without warning. To reduce the risk of failure, we suggest that customers have oil changes at intervals of 4,000 to 5,000 miles, rather than the standard 6,000 miles. Regular maintenance is crucial in prolonging the life of these orings. Our aim is to identify the problem before it affects other components.

Another upper pan o-rings replacement is under way! Everything else checking out good on it! That’s the benefit of doing it before it completely mixes. Our customer is saving a lot of money doing it as soon as it started.

We had a weird one a few weeks back. Customer was concerned about a severe oil leak and they didn’t know where it was coming from. Unfortunately, it was coming from one of their “new” cam seals that someone installed. An unnamed franchised auto repair shop had done a head gasket job on this car and used cheap seals and gaskets. In this case it was the black aftermarket cam seals that was causing this actively dripping oil leak. We had to take one of the timing covers off to locate the leak and our borescope camera.
