**September might be one of the best boating months in the Northwest.**

The crowds are thinning out and the marina is getting quieter. The mornings get crisper but there are still plenty of good boating days ahead.

It also happens to be a great time to shop for a boat. Sellers who hoped to make a move during the summer may be more motivated, and buyers have a chance to see a boat for what it really is—not just how good it looks tied to the dock on a perfect July afternoon.

If you’re thinking about buying, selling, or simply wondering what your boat is worth in the current market, give us a call. We’re always happy to have the conversation.

Your nose might be one of the best troubleshooting tools on your boat.

One of the most useful things an owner can do is get very familiar with what's normal for *their* boat. New sounds, smells, or vibrations are often your first indication that something has changed. A few you should never ignore:

🔹 Hot rubber — Slipping belt, overheating hose or another component getting hotter than it should. Definitely check.
🔹 Diesel or gasoline — Don’t assume anything. Find the source, especially with gasoline.
🔹 Electrical or burning-plastic — Shut down the affected equipment and investigate. Overheated wiring and connections can become serious problems quickly.
🔹 Rotten eggs — Depending on where it’s coming from, this can indicate a battery problem or sanitation issue.
🔹 Musty or earthy — Time to look for moisture, leaks and areas with poor ventilation.

Pay attention to the little things because they have a habit of becoming big things.

A GOOD BROKER SHOULDN'T JUST HELP YOU BUY A BOAT.
They should help you figure out which boat makes sense for you.

It’s easy to fall for the biggest, the shiniest, or the one with the longest equipment list. The best boat is the one that *fits the boating you’ll actually do.*

Are you thinking day trips, weekends? Crabbing? Taking kids or grandkids? Fish? Entertain? Explore the San Juans? Do you need an enclosed helm for Northwest weather?

Plus there’s the practical side: moorage, fuel, maintenance, insurance and the condition of the boat…..this all matters after the excitement of the purchase dies down. Let us help you define your needs.

60-Second Skipper: Why Doesn’t Your Depth Sounder Match the Chart?

Ever notice your depth sounder says 18 feet, but the chart shows 12?

NOAA charts in U.S. tidal waters, depths are referenced to Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) — a standardized reference. The actual water depth changes with the tide. Charted depth + current tide height ≈ expected water depth. Your depth sounder, on the other hand, is measuring the distance beneath your boat right now.

KNOW YOUR SOUNDER SETTINGS! Sounders can be configured differently: Depth below the transducer, below the keel, or from the waterline. A few feet can matter, especially here in the PNW.

At Everett Yachts, we’re not going to start with “How much boat can you afford?” but with “What kind of boating do you want to do?”

The best boat isn’t always the biggest, newest or most expensive one. It’s the one you’ll use.

The right boat is the one that fits your crew, your budget and the way you actually want to spend your time on the water.

At Everett Yachts, that’s where we like to start - with getting to know you and your boating needs.

Because the goal isn’t just to own a boat. It’s to use it.

August boating is here!

The days are still long and there’s plenty of cruising season left — but now is also when little things start showing up.

Take a look at the strainers. Check your batteries and coolant. And if you’ve been saying, “I’ll deal with that later” since Spring… well, later has arrived. A little mid-season maintenance now can mean more time enjoying the best part of a PNW summer.

*And if “LATER” means it might be time for a different boat, we can help with that too.*
