One of our favorite parts of Velocity Invitational weekend was the opportunity to showcase our talents to a group of highschoolers from the Car Appreciation and Preservation Program (CAPP). CAPP is a fully-accredited restoration class offered to all high schoolers in Marin County, CA. Car collector Charlie Goodman's nonprofit organization Shifting Gears USA developed and supports this program. At Vintage Underground we love every opportunity we get to encourage future generations to explore careers in the automotive world, especially vintage restoration.

Our McPherson College intern Lucas demonstrating how the sand bag works at Velocity Invitational. The audio is difficult to hear so allow me to give you a rough understanding:

The sand bag allows you to curve your sheet metal. The material in the bag absorbs and disperses the impact from the hammer, allowing you to sink and stretch the metal without flattening or tearing it. Sand bags are often filled with lead shot, steel shot, or silica sand with the former two providing a denser bag. The sand bag is often the first step when making custom parts because it allows you to get a rough first shape with your material. Afterwards you can refine your work with an English wheel or planishing hammer.

One of the most gratifying parts of Vintage Underground's experience at Velocity Invitational was the moment we brought together these three young men at our exhibit. Sam White is a recent graduate, Lucas Swanson is a senior (and an intern in our shop) and John Morris is a sophomore from the renowned automotive restoration program at McPherson College in Kansas. Seeing all three on the ground at a prestigious automotive event like Velocity Invitational was a surreal moment that felt like looking into the future of vintage automotive, and feeling satisfied that it will be in very good hands indeed!

Our Saturday morning at Velocity Invitational included a visit from the girls of the Della Penna Foundation. Founded by Michelle Della Penna, daughter of Indycar team owner and race driver John Della Penna, the Foundation's mission is to offer girls the knowledge, skills, and mentorship needed to fuel a future in motorsports. Our Business Development lead Sue chatted with them about her own experience in the automotive arena and shared that Vintage Underground employs women in the roles of Project Management, Upholstery Tech, and Controller in addition to her own role handling marketing and events. The girls enjoyed taking part in our hands-on metal shaping demonstration, swinging the hammer and learning to work the English Wheel. We hope they were inspired to learn more about the numerous roles played by women in the automotive space, and left with the confidence that they belong anywhere they want to be.

Our team had an outstanding time at the 2026 Velocity Invitational event at Sonoma Raceway! We proudly showcased our customer's newly completed 1955 AC Aceca which has been beautifully restored and customized to his exacting specifications. The car was very well received alongside our old-school metal shaping demonstration where our McPherson College intern Lucas Swanson walked spectators through the process of shrinking and stretching metal to achieve the beautiful shapes and curves of a classic car body. Lucas is exceptionally well versed in the timeless techniques of hand-hammering on a stump and sandbag, and refining the work on the English Wheel. Many spectators took a turn with the tools as well!

1965 Mercedes styling meets brutal AMG performance. The 230SL hyperbuild is taking shape, and the fabrication required to mate this hand-fabricated chassis with an AMG 55 drivetrain is next level.

The latest push was all about packaging and tight clearances. Our Fabrication Specialist Erick has been fabricating and fitting the upper firewall, which includes a recess for the hood hinges. After shifting the engine's final resting place slightly to optimize what little space is available, Erick test-fitted parts of the exhaust and the necessary cooling equipment to ensure everything still fits. The puzzle pieces are slowly but surely coming together.

If you guessed a 1965 Lincoln Continental Convertible on our last post, you would be correct! This Continental came to us needing some electrical work before the summer heat hits.

These cars are famous for their luxury, but keeping that iconic automated top functioning perfectly takes some finesse. Our team tackled:

* Retractable Soft Top Electronics: Fully diagnosing and repairing the electronics to ensure smooth, push-button operation.
* Soft Top Restoration: Light upholstery work on the soft top to keep it looking sharp.
* 8-Way Power Seats: Rewiring and repairing the electrical seat tracks.
