Always check your oil and don't put off your scheduled maintenance such as oil changes.
If your engine is making noise make sure to pull over immediately shut the vehicle off and tow your vehicle to a shop you do not want to keep running the engine until it seizes.
Below is a picture of a connecting rod out of an engine where it was knocking heavily and the bearings eventually welded themselves to the connecting rod.
