May is the perfect time to get your vehicle ready for spring and summer, when most road travel occurs. While many focus on oil changes, brake pads and tire pressure checks, there’s one safety element that’s critical yet often overlooked – vehicle headlight maintenance.

Headlights are an active safety item and are the first line of defense on a vehicle; if drivers cannot see objects on the road, they cannot react. To prevent this, drivers must be proactive about headlight maintenance. Proper maintenance maximizes the amount drivers can see down road and side road, which can mean additional reaction time, helping you to avoid hazards that cause accidents.

To spread further awareness on automotive care, owners should follow four best practices when it comes to proper headlight maintenance, not just during National Car Care Month, but year-round:

Understand the choices in headlight performance levels: When it comes to headlights performance, many consumers should know that there are a variety of choices available on the market to help suit their individual needs. For instance, there are options available that offer brighter down road visibility or whiter light which improves contrast and helps drivers distinguish objects on the side of the road better than basic headlights.

Hot air balloons were invented in France in the 1700s.

Sheep, a duck and a chicken were the first passengers aboard a hot air balloon. They survived the very first hot air balloon flight, which lasted about eight minutes.

The longest hot air balloon flight ever recorded was piloted by Richard Branson. The flight originated in Japan and touched ground in northern Canada. This flight was also the fastest recorded, flying across the skies at 245 miles per hour.

The world’s largest hot air balloon festival is hosted in Albuquerque, New Mexico, each year. The festival lasts about nine days and features more than 750 hot air balloons.

Hot air balloon flights are not possible in the rain. This is because the heat inside of the balloon can bring rain to boiling temperatures on top of the balloon, thereby destroying hot air balloon fabric.

Traditionally, each time a hot air balloon lands, champagne is shared. This, you may have known, but you may not know how this tradition came to be. It is said that back in the day local farmers believed that hot air balloons that were landing in their fields may have been dragons descending from the skies. To soothe the farmers’ fears and make peace, the hot air balloon pilots would share a bottle of champagne with the farmers whose land they have disturbed.

Record height for a hot air balloon is 68,986 feet. This was accomplished by avid hot air balloon pilot Vijaypat Singhania, who, along with his copilot, had to wear an oxygen mask to stay alive at such heights.

While you may think of romance, peace and beauty when you think of a hot air balloon, some think back to the American Civil War. During the war hot air balloons were used by both sides for reconnaissance missions.

Hot air balloons have a chase crew. This is a very interesting fact most people are not aware of. What is a hot air balloon chase crew? This is a ground crew that follows the hot air balloon throughout the flight in a chase vehicle. And the chase vehicle must be big enough to take on the balloon, its wicker basket, as well as the passengers at the end of the balloon flight.

Driving With Open Windows is More Economic Than With a Working AC?

This one was examined numerous times, and it is still not completely sure what takes up more from your car, driving with open windows or with a working AC. It is known that the AC takes up a lot from your engine, however, driving with the windows down also makes your car engine work harder, as a result of the aerodynamic drag.

Distraction-Free Driving in 8 Steps
There are many distractions that can take your attention away from the road. The good news is there are ways to avoid them. Keep these steps in mind to help you drive distraction free:

1 - Learn your A-B-C’s – Make this part of your routine before you start the car: adjust your mirrors, buckle your seatbelt, and check on your passenger.

2 - Plan your route – Looking at directions on a phone or map means taking your eyes off the road. So plan your route ahead of time or download a navigation app with voice-directed guidance.

3 - Hang up – Focus on what’s ahead and never text or talk on the phone while driving.

4 - Faster without food – It’s tempting to eat and drive, but when you take a bite or fumble around the bag you’re not paying attention, so enjoy your food after arriving at your destination.

5 - Promote peaceful passengers – Driving is not the time for arguments or crying kids. Keep conversations to a reasonable minimum. If you need them to be quiet, tell them.

6 - Don’t let music distract – Listening to music isn’t dangerous, but fiddling with the dials can be. Create a playlist and keep the volume at a reasonable level.

7 - Be well rested – Driving drowsy is the same as driving intoxicated! If you’re too tired to drive, pull off the road and rest.

8 - Don’t drive drunk – Driving impaired affects judgment and reaction time. Getting a DUI will cause you to lose your license and increase insurance rates. Worse yet, it can result in lives hurt and lost: Don’t drive drunk.

Todays Tip

Inspect all other fluids under the hood (REMEMBER NEVER REMOVE THE RADIATOR CAP).

Motor oil isn’t the only fluid to check. Your car has brake and transmission fluids, coolant, and washer fluid.

Like motor oil, you’ll check transmission fluid with a dipstick. Determine brake fluid, coolant, and washer fluid levels by removing related covers and visually inspecting each. By the way, NEVER remove the radiator cap to check coolant — you risk getting scalded. Instead, check that level in the nearby transparent refill container

What to know about tire wear...

It’s also important to rotate the tires on the vehicle every 5-7,000 miles. Today’s front-wheel-drive vehicles cause the steer tires to wear at a much faster rate than the tires on the rear axle. By periodically rotating the front tires to the back and the back tires to the front, motorists can achieve even tread wear on all four tires and increase the mileage and performance. Failing to rotate the tires often results in the front tires wearing out faster while the rear tires develop irregular tread wear patterns that cause vibrations. The same can be said for alignments. When the vehicle is not properly aligned, the tires will wear out faster which leads to increased operating costs.
