There’s a certain level of excitement that comes with buying a new-to-you car. You finally get the keys, climb inside and expect to enjoy a vehicle that’s been cleaned and prepared for its new owner.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the experience this Elmhurst resident had with her recently purchased 2019 Honda Civic EX.

She came to the 10-8 garage for the first time frustrated with what she had been handed. Instead of a clean interior, she found dirty seats, stained carpeting, dirt packed into the crevices and even dead bugs inside the car.

I know, I know…the audacity.

I understand that this is a used vehicle. Nobody expects a 2019 Civic to look like it just rolled off the assembly line. But I think it’s pretty reasonable to expect that before somebody hands you the keys to a newly purchased vehicle, they at least remove the bug carcasses.

Apparently that was asking too much.

So I got to work giving this Civic the interior reset it should have received before she ever drove it home. I started with compressed air, blowing out the cracks, seams, seat tracks and all those little areas where dirt and debris had been left behind. The deceased former occupants were officially evicted, and the entire cabin received a thorough vacuum before I started working on the surfaces, seats and carpeting.

Then I brought out the heated extractor.

It didn’t take long to discover what a lot of those stains were.

Coffee. Lots of coffee.

It had been spilled across the cloth seats and worked its way into the carpeting. Once I started extracting, you could really see how much contamination had been sitting in those fibers. I worked through the front seats, rear seating area and carpeting, cleaning and extracting until the interior finally started looking like something a customer should have received in the first place.

That’s the part I have trouble understanding. I’m not expecting a dealership to perform the kind of multi-hour detail I do at 10-8, but cleaning stained seats, vacuuming the carpeting and removing obvious dirt and dead bugs seems like a pretty basic standard when you’re preparing a vehicle for its new owner.

She only asked me for an interior detail and specifically didn’t request an exterior wash.

I washed it anyway.

This one was on me.

There are some of us in this business because we genuinely love cars and take pride in how someone feels when they get behind the wheel. Yes, this is a business and I have to make a living, but it can’t always be about squeezing another dollar out of every vehicle that comes through the garage. Sometimes you look at the situation, look at the customer, and decide you’re going to do a little more because it’s the right thing to do.

She may not have received the clean-car experience she expected when she bought her Civic, but I wanted to make sure she finally got it when she left 10-8.

I’m sorry your ownership experience started with disappointment, but I’m glad you found a detailer who cares as much about your driving experience as you do.

Now you can forget about the coffee stains, the dirty crevices and, thankfully, the dead bugs—and just enjoy your new-to-you Civic.

This 2019 Honda Civic EX is 10-8!

Every detail. Every car. Every time.

It must be electric car weekend at 10-8, because apparently somebody unplugged every gas-powered vehicle in Elmhurst and sent all the EVs to my garage.

After finishing a 2025 Rivian R1S Premium for this loyal return customer, it was time for vehicle #2, their 2025 Tesla Model 3. Two electric vehicles back-to-back, and after my adventures with the Rivian, I was actually happy to see a Tesla pull in.

At least I’m familiar with these.

From a detailer’s perspective, I actually appreciate the minimalist interior design of the Model 3. It’s pretty straightforward. There aren’t a million buttons, switches and trim pieces to work around, and more importantly, there aren’t any mysterious Grand Canyons between the seats and center console swallowing french fries, straws and wrappers like the Rivian had.

That doesn’t mean this Tesla didn’t have some work waiting for me.

And then, of course, there was the frunk.
Tesla tells me that stands for “front trunk.”

As a Marine, the word frunk has an entirely different meaning in my vocabulary, so we’ll just leave that one right there.

Whatever you want to call it, it needed attention. I don’t know what it is about Teslas, but the frunk area and door jambs seem to have a special talent for collecting dirt, dust, leaves and grime. I see it on these cars all the time. Open the hood and suddenly you realize there’s another entire section of the vehicle waiting to be cleaned. The frunk was emptied, cleaned and reset, and I worked through those dirty jambs and surrounding areas until they looked like they belonged on the same clean car again.

Then it was time for the exterior.

Black paint doesn’t hide much, and the road film and grime had definitely muted the finish when this Model 3 arrived. I gave it a proper hand wash, thoroughly cleaned the wheels and tires, addressed the exterior glass and worked my way around the entire vehicle. Once everything was cleaned and finished, that black paint came right back to life.

So apparently this weekend’s theme at 10-8 was electricity.

First the Rivian R1S Premium, now the Tesla Model 3. Different vehicles, very different designs and thankfully only one of them made me argue with it about going to sleep.

More importantly, this is vehicle #2 for the same customer, and that means a lot to me. Bringing me one vehicle is an opportunity. Trusting me with another one is a compliment.

Thank you for your trust once again.

Vehicle #2 for this customer is 10-8!

I’ll admit something right up front: I don’t like Rivians.

There, I said it.

This 2025 Rivian R1S Premium belongs to a return 10-8 customer here in Elmhurst, and while I’m always happy to see a familiar customer come back, I’m starting to think Rivian engineers and detailers have very different ideas about how a vehicle should work.

I know these things are loaded with technology, and plenty of people love that. Me? I just want to open a door, move a seat and get to work. Apparently that’s asking too much.

Want to open the rear hatch? I found myself going through the display screen. Standing outside at the back of the SUV with my hands full of detailing equipment and wanting the hatch to open like a normal vehicle? That would apparently be too easy. Then the Rivian decides it’s tired and goes to “sleep.” Suddenly nothing wants to cooperate. Doors don’t unlock, seats don’t move, windows don’t roll down, and I’m standing there wondering whether I’m detailing an SUV or waiting for a software update.

But my favorite part has to be what I can only describe as the Grand Canyon between the front seats and center console.

French fries? Down there.

Straws? Down there.

Wrappers? Absolutely.

Random pieces of whatever the family has dropped over the side? You already know where they went.

The problem is that the canyon is deep enough to collect half a drive-thru order but narrow enough that getting a crevice brush or vacuum attachment into it becomes its own engineering project. I could see things down there. I knew they were down there. Getting to them was another story entirely. At one point I was beginning to think Rivian should include a complimentary set of surgical instruments with every R1S.

Technology battles aside, I still had a job to do..

And I’ll give the Rivian this much: when it’s cleaned up, it’s a good-looking SUV.

Do I suddenly love Rivians now?

Nope.

Too techy for me. Give me a button, a handle and a crevice I can actually fit a brush into and I’m a happy man.

But whether I like the vehicle or not doesn’t change the standard of the work. A return customer trusted me with another vehicle, and my job was to make sure it left my garage looking considerably better than when it arrived.

The Rivian fought me.

I won.

This 2025 Rivian R1S Premium is 10-8!

Every detail. Every car. Every time.

There’s something I really like about seeing a customer come back with a second set of keys just a few days after I finished the first vehicle. That tells me I must have done something right.

Earlier this week, I detailed this customer’s 2019 Audi SQ5 on his first visit to 10-8. Apparently he went home with that Audi looking a little too clean, because now it was his wife’s turn. Back to the garage they came, this time with her 2021 Tesla Model 3.

And while a Tesla may have fewer buttons, vents and traditional controls than most vehicles, that doesn’t mean there are fewer places for dirt to hide. I started inside by thoroughly vacuuming and blowing out the carpeting, seats, crevices and those areas around and underneath the seats where everyday debris collects. The all-weather mats were removed and cleaned, the black seating surfaces were cleaned and refreshed, and I worked through the doors, jambs, console, dash and interior surfaces. The glass received its share of attention too—and with all the glass in a Model 3, there’s plenty of it.

I also made sure both ends of this Tesla got some attention. The rear trunk was vacuumed and cleaned, and up front the frunk and surrounding areas had accumulated a good layer of dust and grime that needed to go. It’s part of the vehicle, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s part of the detail.

Then I moved outside. The Model 3 received a proper hand wash, the wheels and tires were thoroughly cleaned and finished, the road film was removed and that dark gray paint came back to life. This is one of those colors that really rewards you when it’s clean. Once the grime is gone, the reflections sharpen up and you can see the depth return to the finish. The before-and-after pictures from the front, rear and especially down the sides show exactly what I mean.

Two vehicles. One household. One week.

First the Audi SQ5, now the Tesla Model 3. I appreciate the trust when a new customer gives me an opportunity with one vehicle, but bringing me the second family vehicle just a few days later is an even bigger compliment.

His Audi is already 10-8, and now his wife can say the same thing.

This 2021 Tesla Model 3 is 10-8!

Every detail. Every car. Every time.

There’s a certain connection that comes with the badge that doesn’t require an introduction, a handshake or even knowing each other personally. Sometimes you just recognize it.

This 2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring belongs to an Elmhurst resident and the son of a retired police officer. When he told me how he ended up choosing 10-8, I had to smile. He said he took one look at my logo, saw the name 10-8 Hand Washing and Detailing, and immediately knew this was a police-friendly business.

That was all he needed to know. This was where he was bringing his Mazda.

I completely understood. Those of us who spent our careers in law enforcement have a bond, even when we’ve never worked together or met before. There’s a shared understanding of the job, the families behind the people who wear the badge and everything that comes along with it. I’ve always felt something very similar among veterans. You can meet somebody for the first time, learn that they served, and suddenly there’s already some common ground between you.

But enough cop talk. I had a 13-year-old Mazda waiting for some attention.

Inside, this CX-5 had the normal accumulation of dirt and grime that comes with years of use. I pulled the rubber mats, thoroughly vacuumed and blew out the carpeting, seats, crevices and cargo area, cleaned the mats, wiped down the dash, console, doors and interior surfaces, cleaned the leather seating and addressed the door jambs and glass. The cargo area received the same attention as the passenger compartment, and by the time I finished, the black interior had that clean, crisp appearance back without looking greasy or overdone.

Then came one of my favorite colors to detail.

I’ve always loved working on red and black vehicles because when they’re dirty, they can look pretty ordinary—but when you get them properly cleaned and bring that finish back, they POP. This Mazda is a perfect example. I hand washed the exterior, cleaned the wheels and tires, removed the road film and grime, cleaned up the rear hatch area and finished everything off until that deep red metallic paint was reflecting the neighborhood again.

The before-and-after pictures say plenty. Look at the gloss down the sides, the reflections across the hood and rear hatch, the cleaned-up wheels and tires, and that deep red finish once the grime was gone.

And here’s the part I really like:

You’d never know this girl is 13 years old.

No new car payment required. Sometimes an older vehicle just needs somebody willing to put the work into reminding you how good it can still look.

A local Elmhurst customer, a connection through the law-enforcement family, and another vehicle leaving my garage looking a whole lot younger than when it arrived.

There are some vehicles that pull into the 10-8 garage and immediately remind me that we have a little history together. Then there are the ones that make me wonder what happened to them since the last time I saw them.

This 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road belongs to a police officer and previous 10-8 customer. The last time I detailed this SUV was back in 2023, and judging by the looks of it when he dropped it off, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t seen another detailer since.

I opened the door, took one good look inside, shut the door, walked back into the house and took three ibuprofens. I already knew how this story was going to end, and my back was apparently getting an advance copy.

This 4Runner had been used like a 4Runner. Dirt, debris and grime had worked their way into the carpeting, rubber mats, door sills, cargo area and all the usual places that collect a few years of real-world use. I pulled everything out, thoroughly vacuumed and blew out the interior, worked through the seats and crevices, cleaned the rubber mats, carpeting, doors, jambs, console, dash and interior surfaces, and brought the cargo area back from looking like a work zone to something you’d actually want to put your stuff in again. The before-and-after pictures tell the story.

But somewhere in the middle of all that dirt, I found something that stopped me for a second.

One of my original 10-8 business cards.

That made me smile.

That little card had apparently been riding around in this 4Runner for a few years. A lot has changed since I handed those cards out. My customer has since started with a new police department, and I’ve since retired from the job myself. Life moves along, careers change and another chapter begins, but here we were a few years later with the same 4Runner back in my garage. It was good catching up, talking about the job and sharing a few stories.

Once the interior was squared away, I turned my attention outside. The 4Runner received a proper hand wash, the wheels and tires were cleaned and finished, the exterior grime and road film were removed, the glass was cleaned and that gray paint came back with the deep, reflective shine it had been missing. Seeing the finished TRD sitting outside at the end of the day made those three ibuprofens feel like a pretty good investment.

To my returning customer, thank you for trusting 10-8 with your 4Runner again, and more importantly, thank you for what you do. Stay safe out there with the new department.

Your old 10-8 business card served its purpose, so I left you a few fresh ones for the next chapter.

And maybe don’t wait until 2029 to come back.

This 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road is officially 10-8!

Every detail. Every car. Every time.

One of the coolest parts about running 10-8 out of my home garage is watching neighbors become customers long before they ever hand me the keys.

This 2019 Audi SQ5 Quattro Premium belongs to a neighborhood customer making his first visit to 10-8, though he’s no stranger to the garage. He drives by regularly, so we’ve waved, talked and watched the neighborhood change together. Eventually, curiosity got the better of him, and it was time to get his Audi 10-8.

As a German import, the SQ5 arrived with plenty of familiar brake dust. I thoroughly cleaned the wheels, tires, barrels and spokes before moving on to the rest of the exterior. I also removed tree sap, leaves and debris from the paint and windshield wiper cowl, then gave the vehicle a proper hand wash from top to bottom.

Once finished, the white paint, dark glass, freshly cleaned wheels and dressed tires gave the Audi the crisp contrast it was missing. The before-and-after photos really show the difference.

Inside, the SQ5 received a full interior treatment. I vacuumed and blew out the carpeting, seats and crevices, cleaned the rubber floor liners and carpeting underneath, and worked through the dash, console, doors, cupholders, cargo area and door jambs. The glass was finished streak-free.

The lighter-colored leather showed one of my favorite transformations. It wasn’t damaged—just carrying the everyday grime that builds up over time. After cleaning, the seats and bolsters looked crisp again without unnecessary shine.

That’s what I enjoy about neighborhood details. This customer didn’t find me through an ad or drive 30 miles to get here. He had been watching the cars come and go from the 10-8 garage every day.

Now, instead of driving past someone else’s freshly detailed vehicle, he’s heading home in his own.

Welcome to 10-8.

Every detail. Every car. Every time.

Sometimes the easiest detail for a customer is the one where we never even see each other.

This local 2013 Honda CR-V EX came to 10-8 a little differently. The customer requested my pick-up and drop-off service, so when I arrived, the CR-V was sitting in the driveway with the keys left inside. Now, for the record, leaving your keys sitting in an unattended vehicle is definitely not something I recommend, but it was done at the customer’s request. I picked it up, brought it back to the 10-8 garage, completed the detail, returned it to the same driveway and, again at the customer’s request, left the keys inside.

I never even met them.

And you know what? I get it. Some of us simply have less time than others. Work, family, appointments and life in general don’t always leave room for dropping off a vehicle, arranging a ride, coming back for pickup or standing around talking to the detailer. That’s exactly why I offer pick-up and drop-off service. Sometimes the best customer service is simply making the entire process disappear from somebody’s schedule.

While my customer went about their day, I got busy.

This CR-V looked like it may have spent quite a bit of time sitting unused. There were even cobwebs that had to be cleaned out, which isn’t something I run across every day. Inside, the tan cloth seats were heavily stained and had quite a bit of makeup residue worked into the fabric. Light-colored cloth doesn’t hide anything, and the before pictures definitely show what I was dealing with.

I thoroughly vacuumed and blew out the interior, cleaned the plastics, console, dash, doors and jambs, and then turned my attention to those seats. The fabric received a deep cleaning to break down years of accumulated grime, staining and makeup residue. The carpets were also deep cleaned, and the difference throughout the cabin is substantial. This wasn’t about spraying something on the surface and making it smell clean. This interior needed a genuine reset.

The cargo area got its share of attention too. Everything was removed so I could get down to the carpeting and surrounding panels and return an area that looked neglected to something clean, usable and presentable again.

Then it was time for the exterior. The CR-V received a proper hand wash, the paint was cleaned and brought back to a deep gloss, the tires were finished and those wheels received some much-needed attention. What initially looked closer to dark brown than silver came back to the color Honda intended.

Once everything was finished, I drove the CR-V back, parked it in the customer’s driveway and left the keys exactly where I was instructed.

No handshake. No face-to-face conversation. I didn’t get to see the owner’s reaction when they opened the door and saw the transformation.

But I know what I left behind.

A fresh, clean SUV waiting in the driveway and one less thing that customer had to find time for.

This 2013 Honda CR-V EX is 10-8!

Some details are about making a vehicle look better. Others carry a little more weight.

This 2021 Nissan Frontier SV belongs to a new 10-8 customer, and today’s detail was a solemn one. Its owner recently lost his canine companion, and part of my job was to clean the interior and remove the remnants left behind by a four-legged passenger who had clearly spent plenty of time riding alongside him.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve been asked to do a detail like this, and it doesn’t get any easier. Anyone who has loved and lost a dog understands that they’re never just a pet. They’re part of the family. They’re your passenger, your shadow, your buddy waiting at the door and sometimes the reason there’s fur in places inside a vehicle you didn’t even know fur could reach.

So today I approached this Frontier with a little different mindset.

I thoroughly vacuumed and blew out the interior, working through the carpeting, seats, mats, crevices and those areas where loose fur likes to collect. The rubber floor liners were cleaned, the seats and interior surfaces were carefully cleaned and refreshed, the door jambs were addressed and the glass was finished streak-free. The goal wasn’t simply to clean a truck. It was to return the interior to its owner while respecting why I was being asked to do it.

Then I moved outside. The Frontier received a proper hand wash, the wheels and tires were cleaned and finished, the bed and exterior surfaces were addressed, and that blue paint came back with a depth and gloss that the before-and-after pictures really capture. By the time I was finished, this truck looked refreshed inside and out.

The slobber on the windows can be cleaned away. The loose pieces of fur can be vacuumed from the seats and carpet. The paw prints and other little reminders eventually disappear.

But the memories don’t.

I’m grateful this new customer trusted me with a job that was about more than detailing a vehicle. My deepest condolences on the loss of your companion. I hope every once in a while, when you look over at that empty passenger seat, the memories of all the rides you shared bring a smile.

This 2021 Nissan Frontier SV is 10-8.

* This week at 10-8, I completed five interior and exterior details—from German brake-dust removal and a ceramic sealant application to stained-seat restoration, mobile-office organization and enough hidden snacks to stock a small concession stand.
* Four of this week’s documented vehicles belonged to first-time 10-8 customers from Elmhurst. That kind of continued support from my own community means everything to this little garage.
* A previous customer’s referral brought a beautiful BMW X3 into the garage. I never take referrals lightly because someone is putting their own name behind my work when they recommend 10-8.
* The standout interior save belonged to a three-row Toyota Highlander with heavily stained tan seats. After plenty of compressed air, cleaning and patience, those seats—and the rest of the family hauler—were brought back to life.
* Not every detail is about fixing neglect. Sometimes it’s about taking one responsibility off the plate of a hardworking friend. Hand me the keys, handle your business and let me handle the car.
* Five vehicles, five different stories and the same commitment to the result. Every detail. Every car. Every time. 10-8!
