The FMCSA is testing a Split Duty Period Pilot Program that lets truck drivers pause their 14-hour driving window for 30 minutes to three hours using qualifying non-driving time.

🚚How the Pause WorksQualifying breaks:

➡️Off-duty time, sleeper berth time, or on-duty time waiting at a pickup or delivery location can pause the clock.
➡️Time limits: The break must last between 30 minutes and 3 hours.
➡️Driving limits: The standard 11-hour driving limit does not increase. Exceeding a three-hour break or logging it wrong means the 14-hour clock keeps ticking.

🚚 Current Status and Next StepsPre-tests completed: A small pre-test ran from May to July 2026 with nine drivers across select states.

🚚Full pilot planned: A larger pilot with 256 drivers is scheduled for 2027.

🚚 Safety concerns: Safety advocates worry a pause lengthens total workdays and fails to fix shipper detention issues, while supporters say it offers helpful flexibility for traffic or weather delays.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) implemented three major paperwork rules on July 22, 2026. These updates remove unnecessary tasks. The changes remove redundant rules. They help drivers and companies save time. The three specific changes include:

🏁. ELD Manuals Are No Longer Required in the Cab: You do not have to carry a physical paper manual for your Electronic Logging Device anymore. However, you still must know how to transfer logs, carry instructions for reporting device malfunctions, and keep eight days of blank paper grid logs in your truck.

🏁 CDL Holders Do Not Self-Report Out-of-State Convictions: Commercial driver's license (CDL) drivers do not have to notify their home state about traffic tickets received in other states. States already share this data automatically.

🏁. Roadside Inspection Reports: Motor carriers no longer need to sign and return completed roadside inspection reports to the state. You only have to do this if a specific state asks for it.The FMCSA made these updates to cut down on extra paperwork while keeping safety standards strong.
