We use a lab scope to help diagnose vehicles.
We had a 2010 Toyota Corolla come in over heating. While the engine was running some white smoke came out of tailpipe. Thinking we have a blown head gasket, we hooked up the scope to finish our diagnostics. We installed the scope Blue is coolant pressure at radiator, Red is ignition coil on number 1 cylinder, and Green in relative compression of each cylinder of this 4 cylinder engine. The blue signal , the coolant pressure should remain steady while cranking the engine if there is no problem but as you see we have cylinder #3 leaking compression into the cooling system indicating a bad head gasket or cracked block or cylinder head.

Had a vehicle come in the customer complaint was car doesn't start all the time and the charging light flashes and sometimes stays on. As I drove it into the shop I noticed that the oil change was just performed by a local shop. Under the hood I noticed the battery need some much needed attention but 1st I checked the starting system and charging system. Of course both had failed testing so I proceeded to service the battery and once I finished with the battery I rechecked the starting and charging system. Both systems passed with no issues. That verified I had fixed the issue. The shop that performed the oil change could of saved the customer some grief and inconvenience having a battery die and get a jump from someone.
