Here we go again. Another grand adventure. This time you’re invited to follow (or even ride) along!

I’ve had this project in my head for a few years, and even almost attempted it with friends last year before work interfered. The idea is simple: Colorado has four corners, could I connect them with a diagonal line? I hadn’t heard of anyone doing it, which made the idea more novel and exciting, and scary for me.

I wanted to keep the line as diagonal as possible, and for the route to not be overly curated. Colorado is what it is, some flat plains, some prairie, some rivers, some mountains, some majesty, some austerity. To really see a place and get to know it you take the good with the “bad”.

We leave tomorrow morning early, from the Nort East corner. We head southwest into the unknown. 688 miles. 44,362’ of climbing. Our goal is 5 days. That’s ambitious. It’s possible that we’re over reaching. I’m a little scared! But, that’s adventure, and we’re here for it!

We’ve put up a page on the rodeo Journal with all of the ride chapters, the interactive map, gear breakdown, land history, supporters and more. As we researched this route we found so much that we want to share, and it’s all there.

On behalf of myself and David, we hope you can follow along. If you’re so inclined, find our tracking dot on the map and meet up with us for some miles.

I’ll be posting stories from along the way as I’m able, and will have plenty to share about it all when we’re back.

If you’ve gotten a Rodeo bike from us in the last year, there’s a good chance that Ian built it. If so, you’ve probably noticed just how well it’s built. Ian has a few decades worth of experience across the bike industry, including tech roles at the World Tour level. As such, our bikes don’t just work well, they’re built well. So, what does it look like when Ian builds his own Flaanimal 6? Well, this ain’t no World Tour Bike, that’s for sure! It’s way cooler than that. It seems that Ian lost no chance to do something unique or make a statement with his build. He wasn’t out to break the bank or flex with unobtanium components. The choices on this bike are far more nuanced and interesting. We could attempt to type out a part by part highlight reel, but on this one you’re going to have to scroll through, pinch zoom, and appreciate the bike for yourself. How does it ride? Ian’s one sentence review was simply “This thing is so much fun”. Honestly, what more could a bike hope to be?

Spork 4 is the most capable gravel / adventure fork ever, and it’s (finally) available through your builder, dealer, or Rodeo-labs.com.

Read on to find out what makes Spork 4 stand above the rest.




Few people need 2.4” tires, but a decade ago we also thought that anything larger than a 40mm tire was unnecessary. Times change! People push bigger and bigger boundaries. Spork 4 easily fits a 29x2.4” tire with additional room for mud. It almost goes without saying that the more common and popular 2.1” and 2.25” tires fit easily as well.

But if you aren’t into big tires, we’ve tested Spork 4 down to 700x32mm tires and it runs great. Pictured here is a 50mm tire.

Previously, integrated routing required bulky heqdsets with large upper bearings to work. This was fine on carbon bikes with their big head tubes, but metal bikes with slimmer head tubes always looked compromised. Spork 4 solves this with its D-Shaped steer tube, which allows for integrated routing with classic and elegant standard headsets. Spork 4 is still compatible with all third party integrated systems as well, such as ENVE In Route, Wolf Tooth, FSA, Deda, Ritchey, and others.

Not into integrated routing? No problem, Spork 4 supports traditional routing as well.

Here’s another view of a standard stem, spacers, and ZS44 / EC44 headset being used for integrated hidden brake routing.

You asked we answered: Spork 4 supports 160mm and 180mm rotors.

Despite all its features, Spork 4 is quite light! 480g average weight makes it the lightest Spork ever.

Spork 4 is compatible with Son SL Self Connecting dynamo hubs. There is no other carbon for available on the retail market which supports this feature. Self connecting dropouts are pre wired when your fork arrives when the option is selected, and allow you to simply drop your dynamo wheel in and to ride without the fuss of wiring up a hub plug and connecting it each time.

Spork 4 is also available with optional magnetic headlight and hub connectors, pre installed. This makes headlight removal and installation quite easy, and does the same for traditional dynamo wheels that use standard dynamo connector plugs. The magne

The First Flaanimal 6.0 Steel with Spork 4.0

Every bike we build at Rodeo Labs is important, but this Flaanimal 6.0 Steel is extra special: It’s the first of its breed built with our new fork and perfectly embodies our original vision for this bike. Let’s dig in!

We cant help but gush about Spork 4.0! 4.0 fits tires up to 29x2.4, perfectly matching the frame’s capabilities. There’s still room for mud at 2.4, so you can monster truck responsibly.

Dynamo Support: Spork 4 is currently the only retail fork that supports Son’s Quick Connect dropout system - as well as traditional dynamo connectors.

Spork 4’s new D-shaped (Taco-Shaped?) steer tube allows for fully integrated routing without a bulky, proprietary headset. We used a standard ZS44 Rodeo Quite Nice headset, classic round spacers, and a normal stem for a clean, classical look. (Note: standard non-integrated routing is always an option on our bikes and forks!)

Spork 4 also sheds weight while giving the overall bike profile a modern, aggressive stance.

Spork 4 also supports 180mm rotors if you need that much braking power.

This 54cm frame features our standard “Desert Sand” color (available at no extra cost, just like our naked finish), personalized by the owner, Brent, with silver decals.

As you probably know, we don’t often weigh our bikes, but couldn’t resist with this one! It came in at a lovely 21.5 lbs—a fantastic benchmark for a radically capable steel adventure rig. The spec is incredibly solid without being over the top, featuring a Rival AXS drivetrain, Rodeo 3.0X wheels, Vittoria 50mm tires, Praxis carbon cranks, a Repente saddle, and a Ritchey cockpit.

Our first allocation of the Flaanimal 6.0 is completely sold through. The next allocation arrives August 22nd and is nearly gone in all sizes and colors. Following that, the next batch will be ready for customer deliveries in December or January. What do you do next after a record setting expedition cycling the entire continent of Africa from top to bottom? For Adrien Liechti , a month of touring and racing in Norway seemed about right. He kicked off the trip at The Bright Midnight ultra race, and had a smooth ride, but the real fun kicked off when he put all the bikepacking gear back on the bike and switched to touring mode for the remainder of the month. Some of you were today years old when you learned that the melting point of titanium is 1668 °C, or 3.034 °F.

The surface temperature of Nadine’s Flaanimal 6 Ti measures just a few degrees under that, which should make it safe to ride.

It’s new bike day for Juan Alberto de la Roca , of Gravel Adventure Field Guide, and boy did he commission something special for his Flaanimal 6.0 steel build. For the base color, a vintage mustard yellow pulled from the legendary 40 series Land Cruiser was requested - and we obliged! One catch though: if you like this color, don’t ask for it because we hand mixed it with no recipe and have no idea how to ever make it again. 😑. But still, look at that color! Moving on, the bike features a custom painted Cane Creek Cycling Components Invert gravel suspension fork. When paired with these 50mm tires, you know that the bike is going to hover over rough terrain. Juan went for GRX mechanical, probably because no 40 series Land Cruiser ever shipped with Di2. Trust us on that, we checked with the Toyota factory. Throughout the rest of the paint there are dashes of Field Guide and Rodeo iconography everywhere. ITKYK.

This bike is going straight to the East Coast for Official Field Guide business, so keep an eye out for it, and high five Juan and Stephen if you see them!
