MORE FUEL = MORE BOOST? 🤔💨

Ever wonder why adding fuel to your diesel tune makes your turbo build more boost?

Your tune isn’t directly spinning the turbo faster. More fuel creates more combustion energy, which means more exhaust energy driving the turbine. That spins the compressor faster, pushing more air into your engine! 🔥

But there’s a limit! Eventually, more fuel just means more heat, smoke, and drive pressure. 🌡️

Understanding how your turbo actually works is the key to making POWER! 💪

30 PSI isn’t always 30 PSI. 👀

Your boost gauge only shows pressure above atmospheric pressure — and atmospheric pressure changes with altitude.

At sea level:
30 PSI boost + 14.7 PSI atmosphere = 44.7 PSIA

At 10,000 ft:
30 PSI boost + ~10.1 PSI atmosphere = 40.1 PSIA

Same boost gauge reading. Different pressure ratio. Different operating point on the compressor map.

That’s why you can’t judge what a turbo is actually doing by boost pressure alone. 💨

Compressor trim is one of the most misunderstood numbers in turbo sizing. 👀

Trim isn’t a target — it’s an outcome.

It’s simply the relationship between the compressor wheel’s inducer and exducer diameters:

Trim = (Inducer ÷ Exducer)² × 100

So instead of chasing a certain trim number, pay attention to what actually determines how the compressor performs: wheel diameter, blade geometry, airflow, and shaft speed.

A bigger trim number does NOT automatically mean a better or higher-horsepower turbo. 💨

Ever wonder why you hear blow-off valves on turbo gas cars… but almost never on diesels? 🤔💨
On a gasoline engine, you let off the throttle and the throttle plate SLAMS shut. The turbo is still spinning and moving air — but now that air has nowhere to go.
That pressure wave can push back toward the compressor. That’s why a blow-off valve gives the trapped air somewhere to escape.
But most diesels don’t control engine RPM with a traditional throttle plate.
Let off the pedal → fuel gets pulled → RPM drops.
The intake path stays open, so the turbo’s airflow can continue into the engine instead of suddenly hitting a closed throttle plate.
No closed throttle plate = no trapped boost pressure = normally no need for a BOV. 👀

A divided exhaust housing isn’t just a fl**ge with a wall in the middle… 👀

On an inline 6 with a 1-5-3-6-2-4 firing order, a properly designed pulse manifold separates the cylinders into two groups. This keeps the exhaust pulses from interfering with each other before they reach the turbine.

Instead of six cylinders dumping into one common collector, each group feeds its own side of the divided turbine housing. That helps preserve the energy and pressure of each individual exhaust pulse as it reaches the turbine wheel.

🔥 Better pulse energy
🔥 Less pulse interference
🔥 More effective turbine drive
🔥 Better response/spool potential

That divider is there for a reason — but it only works properly when the manifold and firing order work together.

Your wastegate doesn’t actually control boost. 👀

At least… not directly.

A wastegate controls how much exhaust energy/drive pressure is allowed to act on the turbine wheel.

🔒 Wastegate closed → more exhaust through the turbine → more drive pressure/energy → more turbine speed → more compressor speed → more boost.

🔓 Wastegate opens → exhaust bypasses the turbine → less energy driving the turbine → turbo speed is limited → boost is limited.

So when we say the wastegate “controls boost,” what it’s really doing is controlling the exhaust side of the equation — which then controls what happens on the compressor side.

Wastegate → Drive Pressure → Turbine Speed → Compressor Speed → Boost

Understanding that chain makes turbocharging make a whole lot more sense. 💨

Wastegate vs. Blow-Off Valve… do you actually know the difference? 👀

They both deal with a turbo system, but they’re doing two completely different jobs.

🔥 Wastegate = exhaust side
Controls how much exhaust energy goes through the turbine wheel by allowing exhaust to bypass it.

💨 Blow-off valve = compressor side
Releases or recirculates charge air when the throttle closes to help prevent compressor surge.

One controls the turbo from the HOT side.
The other deals with pressure on the COLD side.

Now you know. 🤝

30 PSI ≠ 30 PSI 🤯

Two identical engines. Both making 30 PSI of boost.

One has 30 PSI of drive pressure.
The other has 60 PSI.

Same boost… but one engine is working a LOT harder to get rid of its exhaust. 💨

That 2:1 drive-to-boost ratio means increased pumping losses — and horsepower spent pushing exhaust out instead of putting power to the crank.

This is why boost pressure alone DOES NOT tell you how well a turbo setup is working.

Sometimes that super-fast-spooling turbine housing comes with a price. 👀

What’s your drive-to-boost ratio?

Want to learn how to rizz up girls at parties? 😏

Yeah… I can’t help you there.

But if you want to finally understand INDUCER vs. EXDUCER on a turbo, I got you. 😂

Here’s where people get mixed up:

💨 Compressor Wheel
Inducer = smaller diameter
Exducer = larger diameter

🔥 Turbine Wheel
Inducer = larger diameter
Exducer = smaller diameter

So when somebody tells you, “It’s an 80mm turbo”… your next question should be:

80MM WHERE?! 👀

Follow for turbo knowledge. Dating advice is above my pay grade.
