Great use of modern technology paired with old-fashioned police work- well done WCPD!
Our officers once again leveraged the technology of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) to recover another stolen vehicle and arrested the driver.
This afternoon the West Caldwell Police Department Central Dispatch received an instantaneous Target Alert System notification of a stolen auto traveling into our community along Bloomfield Avenue.
Dispatcher Carriker immediately notified patrols of the vehicle description, license plate, and last known direction of travel.
Within moments of patrols converging on the area, the vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Trax stolen out of Newark, NJ, was located by Lt. Santiago traveling westbound on Bloomfield Avenue and driving in an erratic manner. Once joined by Ptl. Zimmer and Ptl. Berardino, a felony motor vehicle stop was conducted on Passaic Avenue, in the area of Kirkpatrick Lane.
The lone occupant, Abdul Williamson (38), of Newark, NJ was taken into custody without further incident.
Williamson was charged on a Complaint-Summons with Receiving a Stolen Vehicle in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:20-7a (Third Degree) and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:35-10A (1) (Third Degree). He was also issued motor vehicle summons for driving while suspended. All charges have a mandatory CJP court date at the Veterans Courthouse in Newark, NJ.
Williamson was later released from custody in accordance with current New Jersey law.
Our officers continue to work tirelessly to address each of the stolen vehicles that enter our community utilizing good, old-fashioned patrol, coupled with the use of mobile and stationary ALPRs, and Mobile Computer Terminals. These tools are vital to the safety of our community, whereby our officers are able to immediately identify wanted vehicles and intercept them before they can commit further crimes utilizing stolen autos, face masks, and gloves in an attempt to conceal their identities.
Our residents are reminded to lock their doors, remove their valuables, and to contact the West Caldwell Police Department to report any suspicious activity at (973)226-4114.
