On May 6, 2025, the West Caldwell Police Department Detective Bureau received information that a driver of a white Ford Expedition was just involved in a dispute where the driver brandished a handgun in Paterson, NJ. The vehicle was captured on an ALPR camera entering West Caldwell. This information was immediately forwarded to West Caldwell Police Department patrols to check the area of Passaic Avenue for the suspect vehicle.

At 1249 hours, Ptl. Balzano located the vehicle occupied by the driver, later identified as Xavier Cortes, of Prospect Park, NJ, in the parking lot of the Wells Fargo Bank. Ptl. Balzano and Sgt. Redmerski initiated a motor vehicle stop on vehicle in a nearby local business parking lot. DSG. Keepers, Det. Kazoun, and Det. Potucek responded to assist.

Paterson PD was summoned to the scene and conducted a “show-up” identification procedure with their victim, who positively identified Xavier Cortes as the suspect from the earlier incident. Cortes was placed under arrest by Paterson PD and transported for processing. Paterson PD - CSI Unit later responded to the scene and towed the vehicle back to their agency for further processing. A search warrant was obtained, and the search of the suspect vehicle resulted in a recovered handgun.

"This incident once again highlights the tireless dedication of our officers to protecting the West Caldwell community. Through swift coordination, proactive policing, and the use of ALPR technology, our team was able to locate and assist in apprehending a potentially dangerous individual. This is a clear example of how innovative tools, when combined with the professionalism of our personnel, enhance our ability to keep this community safe."
-Chief Dennis A. Capriglione, Jr., West Caldwell Police Department

Our officers once again leveraged the technology of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR) to recover another stolen vehicle and arrested the driver.

This afternoon the West Caldwell Police Department Central Dispatch received an instantaneous Target Alert System notification of a stolen auto traveling into our community along Bloomfield Avenue.

Dispatcher Carriker immediately notified patrols of the vehicle description, license plate, and last known direction of travel.

Within moments of patrols converging on the area, the vehicle, described as a white Chevrolet Trax stolen out of Newark, NJ, was located by Lt. Santiago traveling westbound on Bloomfield Avenue and driving in an erratic manner. Once joined by Ptl. Zimmer and Ptl. Berardino, a felony motor vehicle stop was conducted on Passaic Avenue, in the area of Kirkpatrick Lane.

The lone occupant, Abdul Williamson (38), of Newark, NJ was taken into custody without further incident.

Williamson was charged on a Complaint-Summons with Receiving a Stolen Vehicle in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:20-7a (Third Degree) and Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in violation of N.J.S.A 2C:35-10A (1) (Third Degree). He was also issued motor vehicle summons for driving while suspended. All charges have a mandatory CJP court date at the Veterans Courthouse in Newark, NJ.

Williamson was later released from custody in accordance with current New Jersey law.

Our officers continue to work tirelessly to address each of the stolen vehicles that enter our community utilizing good, old-fashioned patrol, coupled with the use of mobile and stationary ALPRs, and Mobile Computer Terminals. These tools are vital to the safety of our community, whereby our officers are able to immediately identify wanted vehicles and intercept them before they can commit further crimes utilizing stolen autos, face masks, and gloves in an attempt to conceal their identities.

Our residents are reminded to lock their doors, remove their valuables, and to contact the West Caldwell Police Department to report any suspicious activity at (973)226-4114.
