Evap leaks are very common and sometimes difficult to locate. Here we find a pinhole leak at the purge valve input fitting. The valve functions as designed.

Properly charged A/C (R134). High side: 300psi (and rising); low side 60psi. This one will need a fan clutch … proven by the lack of air flow across the condenser.

AC leak detection with CO2. Here, we’ve plugged the evaporator drain (red plug in the video) and injected 110psi CO2 into the AC system. We use CO2 because it is more dense than air (oxygen/nitrogen) and has a tendency to sink and accumulate making detection easier. After running the leak detector across all AC lines, the compressor, and the condenser- finding no leaks, we check the evaporator . Then, to break the bad news to the customer…

A/C won’t hold refrigerant… here, under steady vacuum, the system only pulls 28.8inHg. Vacuum disconnected, this system loses 1inHg in less than 30s. a A non-leaking system will draw down to and hold >29.1inHg indefinitly. Standing by to connect CO2 for leak detection.

With OBD code P0340, we could have simply replaced the cam sensor and *probably* been correct. But, why not take a few minutes and verify the sensor actually doesn’t work and there’s not some underlying issue.

Here we test voltage to the sensor with a multi-meter and sensor signal to the ECM with an oscilloscope. Presence of voltage and *no* signal waveform verifies the sensor doesn’t work.
