It got a bit wet around here last week. The shop and home stayed dry but not everybody was so lucky.

Engine dropped out of this NC Miata. This 2.0 has a knock so it's coming out and a 2.5 is going in. The 2.5 is closely related to the 2.0 so this is a reasonably straightforward swap. It's pretty close to a bolt in with some minor modifications necessary. The 2.5 is common and found in 2009 and later Mazda3, Mazda6, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Ford Escape, etc, so you can pick one up with like 60k miles for $400.

It only makes 9hp more than the 2.0 (175 vs. 166) BUT it makes 30lb-ft more (175 vs. 140), AND at 500 rpms lower (4500 vs 5000). All this torque makes it a really snappy and fun street motor.

I've done 4 or 5 of these now, including one about a month ago, and I have another one lined up in two weeks. I guess it's about time for the 2.0s to expire.

On a related note, now that I've done a few of these I'm looking to do one for myself. I've come to like NCs and I haven't owned one yet. If you know of any decent condition NCs with bad motors let me know. I'd prefer soft top, but let me know what you've got.

I'll occasionally get the comment, "so you mostly work on furrin cars?"

It's true, but the reason is simply that in the corner of the automotive world where I choose to work and play - small and medium sized nimble cars - domestic cars are in the minority.

Well today was 'Merican car day! These two were both made by the General and are powered by eight bald eagles driving the rear wheels as God intended.

"Simplicate, and add lightness."

Most car enthusiasts would tell you that this was said by Colin Chapman, and that's what I thought before I looked it up. According to Wikipedia, which cites a Colin Chapman biography, Chapman adopted this from the engineering credo of William Bushnell Stout, and the phrase originated from Stout's designer Gordon Hooton.

This Caterham Super 7 still embodies this philosophy. There are few other cars in existence today that do. Even the one parked behind it is heavy and complicated by comparison.
