MnDOT closes 35W for repaving, and within the same week, every reasonable detour route somehow also sprouts a construction zone, orange barrels showing up on the backup plan like they were tipped off in advance. Nobody's ever explained how this keeps happening. It just does, every single time.

A guy checks his phone, sees the highway's shut down, and reroutes onto a county road he's used for exactly this situation for years. That road's also down to one lane now, flaggers directing traffic through a stretch that was fine two days ago and is somehow, simultaneously, also getting redone. There's no version of the commute that doesn't end in a stop.

Take the frontage road instead and there's a fresh patch of fresh asphalt drying, cones up, a single lane open in each direction like the frontage road decided it needed main character energy too. Somewhere in a MnDOT scheduling office, someone's either running the most coordinated statewide conspiracy in Midwest infrastructure history, or genuinely just picking every possible route at random and hitting all of them at once.

Eventually the whole exercise stops being about finding the fastest way anywhere and starts being about finding the one road that isn't currently being repaved, a search that, by August, usually comes back empty statewide.
