It feels like tipping screens are everywhere now.
Coffee shop? Tip.
Takeout order? Tip.
Even when there is very little direct service, the payment screen still asks for 20%, 25%, or even 30%.
For many customers, tipping is not the real issue. Most people are happy to reward great service. The frustration comes when the tip request appears in situations where the customer did most of the work.
Pickup orders are a perfect example.
You place the order yourself.
You drive to the restaurant.
You walk inside.
You pick up the food.
Then the screen turns around and asks how much you want to tip.
Some people see it as a way to support the workers who prepared, packed, and organized the order. Others feel like it is just another cost added to a meal that is already expensive.
At the same time, restaurant workers are under pressure too. Many depend on tips, while customers are also dealing with higher prices on almost everything.
That is what makes the whole situation so uncomfortable. A simple checkout screen has turned into a moment where both sides feel stressed.
Personally, I believe good service deserves a tip. But when it comes to pickup orders, the decision does not always feel so simple.
