🔥 ROUND 2 — MATCHUP #3 🔥

This one is a battle of the far-from-stock, built-it-the-way-I-want-it rigs.

Treah Kragt’s 1995 Jeep YJ

Dan White’s 1977 Dodge Ram

Treah’s YJ is about as custom as they come, with a supercharged 4.6 stroker, four-speed Atlas, Kingpin Dana 60, Dana 70U, linked suspension, 40-inch Maxxis Trepadors, full hydraulic steering, custom frame and cage. As Treah put it, “the only thing left from the stock Jeep is the ignition switch.”

Dan’s Dodge takes a different old-school approach with Dana 60/70 axles, 5.13 gears, custom four-link suspension, full hydraulic steering, a shortened 110-inch wheelbase and decades of trail experience behind the wheel. His description of the truck says it all: “It’s really nothing special, but it works well and is a lot of fun.”

Two completely different ideas of what a trail rig should be — and both built exactly the way their owners wanted them.

A turbocharged, heavily modified Suzuki Sidekick against a full-size Lincoln Aviator turned serious trail rig. You definitely don’t see either of these builds every day!

Closing out Round 1: Tod Debolt vs. Dwight Fratzke!

Tod’s ’88 Wrangler is packing a 5.3 LS, 4L60E, Dana 60 front and 14-bolt rear with 5.38 gears, linked suspension, 42-inch Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires and beadlocks. Add in a stretched wheelbase, modified cage, custom interior, MotoBilt armor, fuel cell and front and rear AntiRock sway bars, and this YJ is clearly built to travel and wheel hard. Tod has been off-roading since 1986 and has wheeled everywhere from the Badlands and Windrock to Moab and Ouray. After experiencing CORE as a co-driver last year, he’s ready to come back behind the wheel of his own rig.

And yes—your reading this next one right. A Lincoln Aviator. Dwight transformed this luxury SUV into a legitimate trail rig with a Super Duty Dana 60, Sterling 10.5, 5.38 gears, 41.5-inch Pit Bull Rockers, FOA coilovers, hydro-assist steering, custom bumpers, sliders and an exo-cage. He’s been wheeling for 12–13 years and says the camaraderie, variety of builds, different driving styles and chance to meet more off-road enthusiasts are exactly what draw him to CORE.

Calling Treah’s rig a 1995 YJ is technically correct—but as the application says, “the only thing left from the stock Jeep is the ignition switch.” This thing is a purpose-built crawler from end to end, featuring a supercharged 4.6 stroker, four-speed Atlas, Kingpin 60, Dana 70U, 16-inch Radflo coilovers, PSC full hydraulic steering, custom frame and cage, and 40-inch Maxxis Trepadors. Treah has been wheeling for 19 years and is looking to CORE for the challenge, the friendships, and the chance to learn from and connect with even more people in the off-road community.

Jason’s CJ7 is about as far from stock as you can get, too. It’s powered by a Chevy 5.7 EFI V8 with a TH350, riding on 2.5-ton Rockwells with 6.72 gears, three-link/four-link suspension with King shocks, and massive 49-inch Super Swamper IROKs. With 15 years of wheeling under his belt, Jason enjoys everything from cruising through the woods to tackling the extreme stuff—and is always looking for more chances to wheel, camp and meet fellow off-roaders.

Dan’s Dodge Ram is an old-school trail rig that proves you don’t need anything fancy to have a good time. It’s running Dana 60/70 axles with 5.13 gears, custom four-link suspension, full hydraulic steering, a shortened 110-inch wheelbase and plenty of other trail-built upgrades. Dan brings around 40 years of wheeling experience and probably describes the truck best himself:
“It’s really nothing special, but it works well and is a lot of fun.”

Brent’s 1982 Scrambler combines classic Jeep sheet metal with some serious hardware underneath. It features an EFI AMC 4.2, Atlas four-speed, Dana 60s with OX Lockers and 5.38 gears, a double-triangulated four-link front suspension with 16-inch King coilovers, and 40-inch Super Swampers. Brent has been wheeling for more than 10 years and says he’ll take just about any opportunity to hit the trail, meet new people and see how his build stacks up.

Joe’s 1985 Ranger has been in his hands for more than 20 years, and it’s been transformed into a serious old-school trail rig. It’s powered by a 347 stroker with EFI, backed by a full-manual C6 and NP205, with a Dana 60 front and 14-bolt rear running 5.38 gears and spools. Add in a reverse-triangulated four-link, triple-rate coilovers, 44-inch TSLs, double beadlocks, an exo cage, custom bumpers and half doors, and this Ranger is definitely built to work. With 20+ years of wheeling experience, Joe is looking forward to meeting more people who share his wheeling style and run similarly built rigs.

Thomas is bringing some modern hardware to the matchup with his 2022 Bronco. Powered by the 2.7L EcoBoost and locked front and rear, it’s been upgraded with 35-inch tires, a 3-inch suspension lift, additional body lift, trail armor, skid protection, a winch, roof reinforcement and plenty of other trail-focused upgrades. Thomas brings 25 years of wheeling experience and sees CORE as a fun challenge and a chance to meet some new people along the way.

Jesse’s XJ keeps the tried-and-true 4.0/AW4 combo, but it’s built to handle plenty more than your average trail ride. It sits on 35-inch Cooper STT Pros with 4.88 gears, a locked and trussed Dana 30, Barnes three-link suspension, MetalCloak coils, Fox shocks, beadlocks and a 12,000-lb winch. Jesse is ready to push further into rock crawling, explore new places, learn along the way and spend time with the people who make this community what it is.
