I actually think this might be one of the BEST uses for the Hurricane engine yet.
Dodge is working on bringing the Charger back to police departments with the new Charger PPV, and the prototype they showed is based on the Charger R/T SIXPACK.
That means a 3.0L twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six making 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque in the civilian R/T, paired with an 8-speed automatic and AWD.
For a police car? That makes a ton of sense.
420 horsepower is more than enough for highway patrol duty, AWD is going to be useful year-round, and the Hurricane makes plenty of torque when they need to get moving quickly.
This is where I think the Hurricane engine could really shine. You don’t necessarily need a HEMI in every police car. You need something fast, capable, practical and able to perform every single day.
My biggest question is durability.
Can the Hurricane handle the abuse of police duty? Hours and hours of idling, constant acceleration, high-speed driving, extreme temperatures, long shifts and basically getting beat on every day?
That’s what I’m interested in seeing.
Dodge still hasn’t released the final production specs for the Charger PPV, so things could change before these actually hit police fleets. But if they end up close to the 420HP R/T setup with standard AWD, I think Dodge could have a really solid pursuit vehicle on its hands.
I know the Hurricane gets a lot of hate because it replaced the HEMI in the Charger, but THIS is the type of application where I think it makes a lot of sense.
Would you rather see police departments using the new SIXPACK Charger or stick with SUVs?
